Every year at the beginning of December, the Sun conjoins the fixed star Antares. This star is located in the heart of the celestial Scorpion. Antares is a flaming red binary star located at 15 degrees and 54 minutes of Scorpio. Antares in Greek means the “rival of Ares (Mars).” It has a reddish color, making it appear like the Red Planet to the naked eye.
Antares is the star of Uriel (or Oriel), one of the four main archangels that also include Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Uriel means the “Light of God.” As the Regent of the Sun, Uriel is often depicted holding a flame or the Sun. Uriel’s alignment with the Sun at this time ushers in the magical Season of Light leading up to the Winter Solstice and the rebirth of the Sun in the northern hemisphere.
