The Bleeding Disorder Foundation of Washington serves and educates the bleeding disorder community and advocates for access to care for those with rare diseases.
We serve the 70,000 bleeding disorder patients in Washington State. We do this by empowering young families at I-Vy Jr. programs, encouraging kids to be independent at Camp I-Vy, launching teens into life through I-Vy Leaders, bolstering community through Blood Brothers, and advocating for access to medication and affordable care. By serving our community with these goals in mind, the BDFW believes that each bleeding disorder patient in Washington has the chance to thrive and live their best lives.
Our History
The Bleeding Disorder Foundation of Washington began in the 1970’s when parents gathered together at Camp I-Vy for their children. Over the years the Foundation changed its name and took on unimaginable challenges, resulting from tainted blood products in the 1980’s. The result was tremendous devastation for the bleeding disorder community. Almost 70% of the community contracted HIV and, sadly, over half of them passed away.
In 1999, the name Bleeding Disorder Foundation of Washington was established. For over 15 years, the BDFW has been the leading advocacy and support organization for those living with bleeding disorders in Washington State.
Today, the BDFW is launching a national research fund, provides a plethora of educational programs a year throughout the state and is fighting for access to medical care for all bleeding disorder patients.
