We are sorry to have to deliver this sad news. Dr. Kent Dean, PhD, Director of Clinical Development and Director of the CADA School of Addiction and Behavioral Health passed away this week. Our staff is heartbroken. The thing we’re hearing most about Kent (who incidentally, did NOT like to be called “Dr. Dean”) is “he was the best counselor I ever had.”

Kent was brilliant. He just was. Ask any of the CADA staff or other people in our community who have benefitted from his expertise and training. Because of Kent, CADA has at least four CITs/counselors who never would have had the opportunity to play those roles otherwise. He had a gift of helping people understand complex situations. He also had a beautiful voice. Not only did he have a doctorate in counseling, but one in music, too.

Kent was a bright light for so many people in darkness, some of whom had nowhere else to go. Kent was a mentor and a calm voice of reason for many of us who found ourselves in a chair in his office, on a phone call, or on a zoom call with him. He has been the moderator and educator for our Tootsie Davis Family Education and Support meetings for over two years now. In those meetings, he made us all at ease with his anecdotes and personal stories of struggle, his humor, and his grace. He gave us tools to use in times of need, and he made us understand that we are not crazy, but just trying to navigate a big crazy world.

Kent left no project unplanned, big or small, and he wanted no visitation or ceremony for after his passing. So we’ll just leave you with this, one of his favorite quotes by Fred Rogers: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people that are helping.’” We miss you already, Kent.
