In honor of our 40th anniversary, Dr. Goodman sits down with our Executive Director to reflect on the remarkable commitment of our founder, Dr. Robert Jackson, who built MLK Health while working 100-hour weeks as a medical resident. That spirit still drives our work four decades later.

By 1989, their dream became reality. ✨

The clinic moved across the street from Sister Margaret’s Hospitality House into a 2,200-square-foot cinderblock building — simple but full of heart. It had everything that mattered: a waiting room, exam rooms, and a small pharmacy stocked entirely through donations.

For the first time, care could continue beyond mealtime — and a lasting foundation was set for what would become MLK Health Center & Pharmacy.

Before our clinic grew into what it is today, we called Sprague Street home. This 2007 KTBS 3 News feature takes us back to those early days — neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers giving their all, and a mission built on compassion that still guides us 40 years later. ❤

In the late 1980s, Sister Margaret’s soup kitchen on Sprague Street became more than a place to eat — it became a place of hope. 💙

When Dr. Robert Jackson joined her efforts, he recognized familiar faces: patients he’d treated through the hospital’s charity care program, many struggling with chronic illnesses and no access to medicine.

Together, they offered basic medical care right there at the soup kitchen — using borrowed equipment and volunteer help. But when suppertime ended, so did the clinic. They knew it was time to grow.

From student volunteer to Medical Director — Dr. Bass’s journey embodies 40 years of compassionate care.

"During my time at LSU Health Sciences Center, the Martin Luther King Health Center and Pharmacy played a meaningful and formative role in my medical education. Volunteering there gave me real-world exposure to community-based primary care beyond the walls of academic medicine. I had the opportunity to care for underserved patients, manage chronic conditions with limited resources, and practice true relationship-driven medicine -- lessons that shaped my approach long before residency.

MLK allowed me to apply what I was learning in the classroom to real patients who trusted me, and it strengthened both my clinical confidence and my sense of purpose. It was an outstanding adjunct to my medical school training -- not only reinforcing clinical skills, but deepening my understanding of compassion, continuity of care, and the impact that accessible primary care has on the health of a community.

Those early experiences at MLK helped lay the groundwork for the physician I am today. Now having come full circle as the clinic's medical director I am even more impressed with all of the clinic gets done on a relatively small budget."

Decades ago, Sister Margaret came to Shreveport with a simple calling: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and walk alongside her neighbors. What began as small acts of service grew into Christian Services, a movement that still touches thousands. It was from the dining room table in Christian Services' soup kitchen that she co-founded MLK Health.

Her steadfast courage and compassion became the heart of our mission. As we celebrate 40 years, we honor a legacy that shows lasting change begins with dedication, kindness, and showing up for your community.
