Our mission is to provide cutting-edge, comprehensive patient care and the highest quality undergraduate and graduate medical education.
The LSU Health Shreveport Department of Neurosurgery maintains a highly skilled clinical practice with engaged in all clinical sub-specialties of neurosurgery at LSU Health Shreveport’s partner hospitals (Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, Willis-Knighton hospitals, and Overton Brooks VA Hospital). As part of LSU Health Shreveport, we provide a multidisciplinary, team approach to care and pride ourselves in our dedication to care for a highly diverse population and our commitment to foster an educational environment that is inclusive, supportive, and cohesive. We have strong connection to our history. Some of the major achievements in the field of Neurosurgery in the region took place at our institution, including the national accreditation of the Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Regional Epilepsy Center as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center making it the only Level 4 accredited Epilepsy Center in North Louisiana. Some of the most recognized names in neurosurgery have walked our halls and performed surgeries in our operating rooms, including Ed Benzel, Robert Rosenwasser, Donald Smith, Anil Nanda, and Prashant Chittiboina, among many others. We feel a strong connection to this history, and it inspires us to continue this tradition of excellence in neurosurgical education and clinical practice. Our Neurosurgery team is led by a productive group of clinically active neurosurgeons and PhD researchers. The nationally recognized Stroke Center, awarded the Gold Plus Achievement Award and the Target Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Award by the American Heart Association, is housed within the Department of Neurosurgery in partnership with the Departments of Neurology and Radiology. Our comprehensive residency training program is among the best in the U.S., and our residents are among the most competitive fellowship and employment candidates upon completion of the program. Our leadership team is dedicated to ensuring that our trainees leave LSU Health Shreveport with the surgical skills and expertise needed to manage the most complex of patient needs, the ability to lead others, the highest level of professionalism, and marketability as they move on in their careers in neurosurgery.

The Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) 2025 Annual Meeting was recently held in Los Angeles, California. Our department was well represented with both presenters and attendees. This meeting provided a great opportunity for learning and networking with other neurosurgeons. We additionally got to see some of our alumni! Dr. Bharat Guthikonda, Professor and Chair, participated in a session regarding Management of Aneurysms Associated with AVMs, Dr. Christina Notarianni, Professor and Residency Program Director, participated in the Swimming with Sharks session and discussed whether or not students should take a gap year. Dr. Joseph Camarano (PGY-5) presented a poster and provided two oral presentations. Dr. Baylee Stevens (PGY-1) presented a digital poster. Jenae’ Naquin (MS4) presented a poster. Dr. Christian Quinones provided two oral presentations.
In conjunction with CNS, the biannual meeting for the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS) was held. Dr. Guthikonda is one of two chosen delegates representing neurosurgeons for Louisiana. Our own resident, Dr. Joseph Camarano (PGY-5) was selected as this year CSNS Melany Thomas fellow and gave an excellent presentation at this meeting on the topic of expert witness qualifications. Congratulations to him on this prestigious position within CSNS!

Last weekend, September 12–14, 2025, the 41st Southern Biomedical Engineering Conference (SBEC) was held at the University of Texas at Tyler.
Dr. Deepak Kumbhare served on the Program and Organizing Committee and chaired/co-chaired three sessions: Electrophysiology and Neuromodulation, Neuroscience- Neuromodulation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Health Care. These sessions were organized in collaboration with Dr. Elisa Castagnola (Assistant Professor, Louisiana Tech) and Dr. Subhajit Chakrabarty (Associate Professor, LSUS).
Our group had a strong presence at the conference: five students/research associates gave oral presentations—Greyson Jadwin, Luke Landry (MS2), Christian Quinones, Ian Angel (MS2), and Bailey Lupo (MS2); and two students presented posters: Wesley Jameson (MS2) and Andrew Schwartz (MS2). Additionally, five students from Louisiana Tech and LSUS who worked with our department also presented their work.

Our dedicated faculty physicians, residents, and nursing team offer all neurosurgical subspecialties to patients, perform cutting-edge research in labs, and take advantage of Oschner LSU Health Shreveport’s world-class facilities to deliver outstanding care to patients and their families during the most critical times.
Our surgeons are considered leaders in their fields, offering patients extraordinary technical expertise in fields as diverse as aneurysm, pediatric neurosurgery, epilepsy, spine, and stroke. Many are continually publishing articles in their specialties and performing research that explores new approaches for treating neurological conditions.
Patient care and training take place at four partner hospitals: Ochsner LSU Health Academic Medical Center, Willis-Knighton, Shriners Children’s Hospital, and the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Students and residents also rotate through rural hospitals and clinics in the region.
Oschner-LSU Health operates our teaching hospitals and clinics in Shreveport and Monroe, which include the area’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center.
The Department of Neurosurgery is not only one of the top practices in the South, we are also one of the top neurosurgery residency programs in the country, offering exposure to multiple neurosurgical sub-specialties and unique local benefits of global neurosurgery in the form of a free neurosurgery clinic that serves patients from throughout the state and region.
An advantage of our academic setting and our focus on specialized expertise is that patients are directed to the most appropriate specialist rather than the first available surgeon. We promote cross-discipline consultation and interdisciplinary approaches to patient care. Our doctors work together incredibly well, and patients benefit from a true team effort.
