🎉 Please join me in congratulating Tricia on her new position as our Assistant Office Manager! Tricia has been with us for four years and has naturally and steadily grown in her role. She is a warm-hearted, kind and dedicated member of our team that goes above and beyond everyday to meet the needs of our patients and our provider team. She has been an enormous help to each and every one of our providers, and we are so grateful that she is now stepping into more advanced and managerial responsibilities.
Tricia is a fierce lover of our BT team and our patients, and we are so thankful for all that she does each and everyday to support us. ❤️ Thank you, Tricia!

It’s going to be dangerously cold for the next several days. We are all for getting fresh air and movement outdoors all year long, but these temps call for caution! It will be well below zero with the windchill. Please be sure to keep yourself (and your children and your pets) safe!

🕰️ Limit outdoor time
🧣 If you must go outside, dress in adequate layers.
👶 🐶 Make sure children have one more layer than adults, and pets are layered and ears and paws are protected!

👖 BASE LAYER: At least one layer underneath your normal everyday clothes. Everyday clothing layer should be heavier like sweatshirts, sweatpants.

🧦 WOOL SOCKS: Keeping toes warm is essential, as they can get frostbite fast!

🥾 INSULATED & WATERPROOF boots.

🧣 OUTER LAYER: Weather-proof, insulated coat, snow pants, balaclava (neck warmer), hat and hood, gloves. Exposed skin can get frostbite in less than 30 mins with below zero windchill.

🧤 EXTRAS: Hand warmers, toe warmers, and lip balm help you stay ahead of the effects of the cold and wind.

Thanks to the Spirit of Change for giving cupping some much-deserved attention! 😍 A couple things in the article aren’t exactly spot on. One thing it notes is that “when done properly”, cupping marks should go away within 24 hours. 😒 No. Erroneous. If you have a lot of stagnation, cupping can help move and release it, which can result in fairly dark red/purple marks on the skin. These can take a week or more to fade away “when done properly”.

Learn what cupping therapy is, its ancient history, methods, benefits, healing uses, and important safety considerations.

Happy Winter Solstice! Today marks the shortest day and the longest night in terms of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere as our Earth’s tilt away from the sun is at its maximum. Tomorrow and everyday after, we will experience the gradual return of more light. Energetically this is an important day, which is why it has been celebrated widely in ancient traditions. In Chinese Medicine theory, we understand that today marks the shift from most yin to gradually more yang. Though in a way it feels like winter is just beginning with its cold temps and snow, the Solstice is all about sunlight, and right now we are already in the deepest part of the darkness. This is why some describe the Solstice as as a time of hope, as it’s natural for people to yearn for more light again, and they will soon be able to see and feel it.

Most people think of the winter time as a time when “everyone gets sick”. And perhaps they’re not wrong. But maybe that’s because we as a society are not practicing what this time of year is all about: REST. If we honor what our bodies need this time of year, we can actually experience our health strengthening and our bodies feeling stronger throughout this season.

Here are some tips to help you preserve your energy and stay healthy through the winter.

1) REST. 😴 The darkness should remind us that we need more sleep. Aim for 8-9 hours of sleep per night, and even more time resting. Going to bed earlier and sleeping in later. Why? Your body needs to replenish qi that it used up in the months of longer light, so that it will be there to use again when the long days of light return. Also, rest strengthens your Wei Qi (or protective energy, aka your immune system). Get adequate rest - get sick less often!

2) EAT/DRINK WARM FOODS. 🍜 Now is not the time for lots of salads and yogurt and iced drinks. Our bodies need warmth (yang) during this yin time. Start your day with warm lemon water, eat warm oatmeal (not cold overnight oats), hearty foods like roasted root vegetables, warming grains, bone broths and warming spices like garlic, ginger, cinnamon and turmeric.

3) MODIFY EXERCISE. 🧘 Unless you have a big race that you are in training for, this is not the time of year to be outdoors pushing limits. Exercise should be slower, easier, more moderate. (Again, your body needs rest.) This doesn’t mean don’t exercise! It means do more restorative yoga, take walks, hike or ski, some moderate weight training and light cardio. Remember the goal of this time of year is to harness and strengthen qi for the longer days ahead - not use up and deplete all your qi (and get sick).

4) REFLECTIVE PRACTICES. ☯️ What has this year taught you? What do you need less or more of? Journal. Meditate. Manifest. Some people like goal setting this time of year. Think about what direction you’d like to move in and deliberately design how you can get there.

5) TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH. 💡 Address chronic health concerns and don’t ignore what your body is telling you. See a doctor. See a therapist. Get acupuncture, chiropractic and massage therapy. None of us can be at our best health alone. Let people help you!
