Lumen Optometric

Lumen Optometric Creating an exceptional eye-care experience where the latest research and technology converge with a children now myopic.

Myopia (also known as nearsightedness, where distance vision is blurry) is growing at an alarming rate, with 1 in 3 U.S. Researchers believe that the environment kids grow up in today, with too many close distance activities (like reading and device use) and lack of outdoor play, is contributing to the rapid increase in childhood myopia. While glasses and contact lenses compensate for a child’s blurry vision, they don’t stop your child’s vision from continuing to deteriorate. As children grow, myopia often develops as they reach school age and progresses into their late teens or early twenties.

Did you know outdoor time can protect your child’s vision?

A trial in China found that adding just 40 extra minutes of outdoor play each school day reduced new cases of myopia by over 20% (He et al., JAMA, 2015).

Natural sunlight is one of the most powerful protectors against myopia (blurry distance vision), yet shorter fall days and colder weather mean kids spend less time outside. At Treehouse Eyes, we combine proven treatments with lifestyle guidance to help slow or even stop myopia progression. Give these outdoor fall activities a try!

While we were busy slowing down Summer's myopia with ortho-k, she was busy honing her skills to get into USC! We asked her for some tips that her fellow high-schoolers might find helpful:

"I focused my efforts on extracurriculars surrounding social causes and giving back to the community through leadership."

Some other neat things that Summer has accomplished:

She was the keynote speaker at the Google HQ in addition to being instrumental in raising $36,000 for pediatric cancer research for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society!

Keep it up, Summer!

Congratulations for Josh for being accepted into Yale! Josh was expanding his horizons while we were ensuring that his myopia wasn't expanding.

We asked Josh what he focused on while in high school and he told us:

"I love creating things together with people, whether that is music, robots, math ideas, theatrical experiences, or food. This love has manifested in the form of building robots with my team and competing against other teams from all around the world; performing at choir concerts in Italy, New Orleans, and Portugal; scribbling various theorems, numbers, and unidentifiable shapes with friends on whiteboards, and making a mess in all of my friends' kitchens. I'm excited to do what I love at Yale in the fall."

Yale is lucky to have you!

Congrats to Gavin, he's attending Wheaton College this fall!

We asked Gavin what his secret was to his sucess and he told us an intense focus on both academics and being extremely competitive at water polo. He also mentioned that networking was critical, he went out of his way to form connections with his network of teammates and coaches.

Way to go, Gavin!

What is Myopia?
Myopia means kids see up close clearly but struggle to see things that are far away, like the whiteboard in class.

Myopia is a progressive disease that increases the risk for retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other serious eye diseases later in life.

The good news: Early detection and comprehensive eye exams allow Treehouse Eyes doctors to slow or even stop its progression.

We feel so fortunate to care for our young patients’ eye health and to watch them grow into thriving, confident adults. Meet Aidan.

Aidan worked diligently throughout high school and will be attending SLO in the fall. We asked Aidan to share some wisdom about what it took to get there and he mentioned...taking early/dual enrollment courses at a local college, and being involved in school (key club, robotics, swim team). Aidan also crushed the AP Spanish test as a freshman!

We're super proud of you Aidan!
