Tips for Better Sleep This Christmas Break 🎄
The holiday season is the perfect time to recharge, and good sleep is key! Follow these simple tips to enjoy quality rest:
✨ Skip heavy meals and alcohol late at night
A big dinner or a glass of wine before bed might feel comforting, but they can disrupt your sleep. Alcohol may help you fall asleep quickly but leads to poor-quality rest and wakefulness during the night.
✨ Create a tech-free bedroom
Reserve your bedroom for sleep, relaxation, and intimacy. Avoid using it as a space for scrolling, working, or binge-watching TV. Keeping technology out of the bedroom can greatly improve your sleep quality.
✨ Dim the lights
Blue light from phones, tablets, and laptops blocks melatonin, the hormone that makes you sleepy. Refrain from screens at least 3 hours before bed, or invest in blue-light-blocking glasses for evening use.
✨ Wind down naturally
Our bodies are wired to sleep when it’s dark. Swap screen time for calming activities like reading a paper book, meditating, or journaling to signal to your body that it’s time to rest.
This Christmas, give yourself the gift of peaceful, restorative sleep! 🌙💤

Warning ⚠️ Long Post!!!
As I’m listening to Atomic Habits by James Clear I can’t help but notice the connections with myofunctional therapy.
James mentions “treating the symptom without ever addressing the cause”
I am always discussing this with clients. Symptoms like jaw, neck, shoulder pain and tension, headaches, digestion issues, attention disorders, exhaustion, sleep disorders, breathing problems, cavities, gum disease, crowded teeth, dry mouth, chapped lips, allergies, sinus issues, congestion, eating/swallowing problems, speech problems, acid reflux and the list goes on.
What caused these SYMPTOMS? This is what we need to be asking!!! Now what is the root cause and let’s fix that! Myofunctional Therapy is making small changes to correct the function that has contributed to the symptoms.
Yay!!!
Just a little connection I thought I would share.
Please let me know if you have any of these symptoms or know someone who may benefit from Myo, I would love to help.😁
Contact me to schedule a consultation!

Just want to thank parents who are involved in their kids therapy! This is a must for success!!! Met with my 10 year old client doing wonderful after only 2 sessions over 2 months. His family and friends have already noticed a change in his appearance, specifically his front teeth are moving (severe overbite). It is only going to continue to improve and having a supportive parent is a huge piece in her son's progress. 🤩

Does Your Upper Lip Tie Need Treatment? 🤔✨

When it comes to lip ties, not every case needs intervention.

Here are the 3 key criteria we look at to decide if the frenum is restrictive.

1️⃣ Attachment site: Mucosal, Gingival, Papillary, or Papillary Penetrating

2️⃣ Tension: Whether or not there’s tension along the mucosal frenum.

3️⃣ Symptoms: Difficulty brushing teeth, oral incompetence, diastema, etc.

Early detection and treatment can make a big difference

Did you know your tongue is a lymph draining organ?

A strong well positioned tongue is an effective toxin clearing system.

Most people aren’t aware how important their tongue posture is.

It’s also capable of absorbing. The mucous membrane of the tongue can absorb some substances – for example medications that are to act quickly.

A tablet, fluid or spray put underneath the tongue, but not swallowed, is called sublingual administration, and absorbs into the body faster than the digestive system.

Let’s look at how the tongue drains into the lymph system.

The tip of the tongue drains into the submental lymph node under the chin.

The middle of the tongue drains into the submandibular node, which you can feel under the jawbone.

At the back, down toward the throat, it drains to the deep cervical nodes that run down through the neck which you can see on the image above.

What is important to remember is that lymph drains via movement.

Proper movement of the tongue is a skill that most people aren’t aware of. It is a complex muscle system, and each of these different segments must move properly for the lymph system to flow properly.

The tongue has a great ability to move in all directions. The reason for this is the way the muscle fibers are arranged, which is unique in our body. They run in all three directions: from front to back, from the sides to the middle and from top to bottom. This allows the tongue to make the following movements:

It’s the only muscle in our body that can actively contract and extend. When the vertical and horizontal fibers contract at the same time, the tongue becomes narrower and longer: we can stick our tongue out.

• Raising and lowering
• Bending backwards
• Advancing and retracting

So, let’s try a tongue movement exercise:

1) Open your jaw as wide as it will go
2) Poke the tongue out as far as it will go (keeping to straight to the horizontal)
3) Move slowly side to side touching each corner of the mouth (Repeat 10x)
4) Put the tongue to the floor of the mouth and lift the tongue right to the palate behind the upper front teeth (Repeat 10x)

Did you know the tongue movements clear the lymphatic system of the mouth and neck?

We don’t all look alike!
If a provider only looks under the tongue they are missing the point.
All about tongue function🙌

Here's the key:

Focus on tongue exercises to improve movement and function.

Consider frenotomy only if needed, and ensure collaboration between doctor and therapist for optimal timing, prep, healing, and communication.

By supporting both function and structure, we achieve the best outcomes.

Great info for all ages.

If a child is grinding during sleep, it is important to rule out airway problems as a root issue.

This is one of two children that I saw today that had been made a bulky nightguard to manage the grinding, but mum reported she couldn’t keep it in.

When any underlying breathing problem is not addressed, these can worsen a child’s breathing and sleep.

In this case, there are several anatomical contributors to poor airway including a tongue-tie, a narrow and constricted palate, and underbite related to lack of forward growth of the midface.

Grinding is a stress response to help keep the airway open and protect against oxygen deprivation.

But it is linked a chronic fight or flight state, and can be linked to difficulties falling asleep, and generalized anxiety. Sleep is very restless, disturbed, and unrestorative, and for this young patient, there are also difficulties with emotional regulation.

Her parents have tried everything to get her to sleep including sleep training, melatonin, sound machines, darkness, red lights, mattresses next to their bed, reward charts, music, white noise, lullabies, and changing sleep times without success. The one thing that has been missed is addressing poor breathing.

It is important that parents recognise that teeth grinding is a symptom. That way you can feel empowered to find professionals that will focus less on managing it, and more on addressing root causes.

We Need a Medical Revolution

After 11 years and 14,000 tongue tie releases, I’m astonished that I still feel like I’m on a medical island. Very few of my ENT, pediatrician and dental colleagues are on this island with me. Sure, there’s more than there used to be. But I’d wager that those of us “in the know” when it comes to tongue tie still comprise

Great information! This is something for anyone who clenches or grinds their teeth. Your body is trying to open your airway. So common but not normal and we need to change our way of thinking.

How do you keep good oral rest posture when you are sleeping 😴

When you have tongue range of motion, function and space ……….👅

➡️ the tongue makes a negative suction cup effect to seal itself to the roof of the mouth.

➡️ negative suction cup effect prevents the tongue from collapsing backwards.

I hear this all of the time! “My Dr said I don’t have a tongue tie since I can stick my tongue out”. You need a functional assessment with a Myofunctional therapist or someone with extra training/knowledge to evaluate.

I have also recently had an influx of patients being told by their pediatricians or medical practitioners that if the can poke out then there is no

Being able to poke the tongue out is a bad way of determining the absence of a tongue tie!

Have a look at these two pictures, taken one after the other, of the same patient…the same tongue!!!

The tongue can poke out but its lift is extremely compromised.

Do you think this tongue is tied?
