Galvanism is a well-known and long-standing problem in dentistry. Dental implants and their prosthetic components are made of a variety of metal alloys. There can be up to 5 different alloys in a restored dental implant. This combination of metal alloys in the wet oral environment will undergo galvanism, create electrical currents between the components that lead to corrosion, metal ions release, and periimplant tissue inflammation and pathology.
