Local heroes going above and beyond to keep children safe! 👏

On Thursday, December 4, 2025, PMIC Kreider and driver B. Elliott were on duty in the Prince Frederick area when they observed a child riding without proper restraint in the back of a passenger vehicle. As they returned to the Medic Office, the crew followed the car along Route 4 and saw it turn into the Prince Frederick Walmart parking lot.

The medic crew continued into the parking lot and watched as the occupants entered the store. CALS Life member Brandi Elliott went into the store and located the adult driver, asking her about the unsecured child. The driver explained that the car seat was broken and she was currently unable to afford a replacement.

Life member Elliott purchased a new car seat and made sure it was properly installed in the family's vehicle. This action demonstrated a strong commitment to the well-being of Calvert County residents and reflected the high standards of CALS membership. The organization’s leadership expressed appreciation for the crew’s dedication and personal initiative in making a potentially dangerous situation safe.

Broselow Tape Safety Alert

Certain AirLife Broselow Rainbow Tapes (Revision 3, 36-23446) contain incorrect medication doses, listing vecuronium 0.1 mg/ml instead of the correct 0.1 mg/kg dose and flumazenil as 0.1mg/kg rather than the correct 0.01 mg/kg dose. These errors involve high-risk medications and could lead to dangerous tenfold overdoses, including neuromuscular blockade complications or increased seizure risk with flumazenil. Organizations using this tape should immediately assess their supplies, implement risk-mitigation strategies, and educate staff about the error.

EMSC was well represented at Emergency Nursing 2025! It takes a village to improve outcomes for children seeking emergency care in DC and across the country. I'm grateful to have such a strong network behind the National Pediatric Readiness Project and other evidence-based strategies we can implement in our region.

The ENA (Emergency Nurses Association) delegation in New Orleans voted 95% !!! in favor of passing GA25-02: Designation of a Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator in Every ED. ENA took a strong stand in favor of Nurse PECCs for Pediatric Readiness! Thank you to everyone who supported and pushed for this important resolution.

Parents and families of young children have many questions when it comes to their child’s development. CDC’s Milestone Tracker app can help them keep track of their child’s milestones in one easy to use app. Recommend the app to your families and encourage them to share their child’s progress with you at their next well-visit.

🚫 If your child’s car seat grows mold, it’s not safe to use.
Mold can linger deep in the fabric, padding, and on the shell. It can pose serious health risks. Nothing strong enough to kill mold can safely be used to clean it from a car seat.

👉 The safest choice is replacement, not cleaning.
