Oh no, EOS! Was that pot hot? Good thing it’s Safety Meeting Monday!
This week’s topic is “Treating Burns“.

A burn can be painful or painless, according to the degree. The degree of a burn is determined by its location on the body and the number of skin layers affected. Heat, electricity, chemicals, or radiation can cause a burn. The first response in a burn situation is to stop the heat source or break contact between the heat source and the skin. The body holds in the heat and continues to burn until the skin cools. In many cases you can cool the burn with water. Unless told to by a medical professional, never use butter or ointments; they seal in heat and may cause infection. If blisters form, they should not be broken because they protect the burn from infection.

For more information about Treating Burns, check out the latest Weekly Safety Meeting topic from Safety Matters Weekly.

Use of fire extinguishers can come with many risks, so EOS wants to make sure everyone is aware how to safely use them to put out a fire.
Remember, the most important thing in to do during a fire situation is to get yourself to safety and call the proper authorities to combat the fire.

Safety Rules for Using Fire Extinguishers:

Fighting a fire can be extremely dangerous. Above all else, you should never put your safety at risk to attempt to use a fire extinguisher. The following rules must be followed should you need to use a fire extinguisher:

•The fire must be small and in its early stages.
A fire extinguisher will not be able to put out a large blaze.
•You must have access to a non-threatened escape route. If the fire gets out of hand, you will need a way to escape. Do not attempt to fight a fire unless you have a safe way out. Be sure to identify a safe escape route before you even reach for an extinguisher!
•Only those people/employees who have been trained on the use of fire extinguishers should attempt to use one.
•Ensure you have the right type of fire extinguisher for the specific type of fire you are trying to fight. Using the wrong fire extinguisher can make the fire much worse!
•Don’t try to be a hero! There is no point in risking your life to save a building that can easily be rebuilt. Be mindful of your own safety at all times and be prepared to use your escape route.
•Inspect all of your fire extinguishers at least monthly.

EOS took a special trip to the tree farm today.
While selecting the perfect tree, EOS made sure to follow the farm’s safety protocols.

Now that the tree is home, there are more safety measures that EOS follows to ensure that the holidays are merry and bright with no danger in sight.
•Keep your fresh tree water by checking water levels every day (or multiple times a day if needed).
•Keep trees at least 3 deep always from electrical and heat sources.
•Turn off all lights when sleeping or away from home.

There’s nothing like a fresh tree, and keeping it fresh is the key to a safe holiday!

Each year many workers suffer eye-related injuries on the job. EOS always wears his eye protection when working in the workshop.

Protective eyewear is important to reduce eye injuries, trauma, and vision loss. The personal protective equipment manufacturing sector does a lot of work to design, test, and create eye and face protection products for a variety of activities.

We must protect our eyes from harm. We CAN reduce eye injuries, IF we wear personal protective eyewear, such as goggles, face shields, safety glasses, or full-face respirators. Remember, we should continue to evaluate our protective eyewear and make a commitment to wearing it regularly.

While EOS and his elf friends are busy getting ready to send holiday gifts all over the world, they always make sure that they select the appropriate packaging required for any hazardous items.

Selecting appropriate packaging for a hazardous material is perhaps the most important step in preventing a hazardous materials release. Appropriate packaging will prevent a package from being dissolved, a v***r from escaping, or other mechanisms of hazmat release.

The DOT Hazmat: Function Specific ‑ Packaging course will help you properly determine the appropriate packaging for a hazardous materials shipment, as well as exemptions to these packaging requirements.

It’s Safety Tip Tuesday!
Today’s Safety Tip of the Week – Mercury in Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Mercury (Hg), also known as “quicksilver,” is a liquid at room temperature but easily ev***rates into a gas. Fluorescent tubes and lightbulbs contain varying amounts of mercury v***r and liquid mercury. When a tube or bulb breaks or is crushed, easily-inhaled toxic v***r is released into the air. Such v***r requires proper PPE and training to clean it up safety.

To learn more about Mercury in Fluorescent Light Bulbs, read the latest Safety Tip Of The Week from Safety Matters Weekly.
