Studies are starting to show a link between children's myopia and smartphone use. It has been found that children with myopia tend to spend more time on their smartphone than children with normal vision. In four decades, the US percentage of children with myopia has gone from 25% to 42%. For more information, read the attached article that the American Optometric Association put out on this topic.

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin invented the bifocal in 1874? At the time, it was revolutionary for people who had trouble accommodating (seeing up close). He designed them by cutting two lenses in half and placing one on top of the other. Although the bifocal design changed over the years, it was the only multifocal option for 85 years.

Then, in 1959 Bernard Maitenaz invented the progressive lens. The progressives that were first introduced to the market were difficult for many to adapt to because of the large amounts of distortion. However, as time goes on, things get better and the technology of progressive lenses on the market today is unbelievable! With a wider prescription channel and the high-definition technology in today's digital progressives, they are most multifocal wearer's go-to. For more information on how today's progressives work, give us a call!

News You Can Use

From the medical journal, Cornea, a large epidemiological study by Japanese Dry Eye Society on VDT users showed that the prevalence of dry eye has increased from 12% to 60%. Dry eye is a multi-factorial disease characterized by an unstable tear film.

Comment from Dr. Petitti: COVID isolation has caused a significant increase in screen time in patients of all ages and dry eye manifestations are by far the biggest area of patient complaint. It is a very common problem and we can help most patients with a variety of treatments including computer glasses, eye drops specific to your tears, nutritional supplements and treatments to enhance tear-producing glands.

Memorial Day this year will certainly be different and we are hoping to keep the memory of those that are serving and have served to protect our country at home and abroad. In addition to Dr. Petitti’s private practice, he is thankful to be an active, on-staff attending optometrist at the VA Newington/West Haven eye clinic for over 35 years and for having the opportunity to serve our military’s eye care needs.

Hello from Dr. Petitti and the staff at Simsbury Eye Care. We hope that you and your family are staying safe and healthy. We wanted to let everyone know that we are still here to help with your eye care needs. Although we are closed for routine eye services, we are still taking emergency visits. We also can order contact lenses over the phone and carry most major brands.

Since the weather is starting to warm up, we are beginning to offer glasses services curbside. We know it’s an unfortunate time to have your glasses break, so feel free to call and schedule a curbside appointment with our new optician, Maryjane, today! All you need is a valid prescription (does not have to be from us). We do not accept vision insurance, but are offering 20% off complete eyewear purchases. Some vision insurances offer out of network claims which we are happy to help you to submit.

Our current office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 9am-3pm and Friday from 9am-1pm. Our office number is 860-658-1620. Our sincere best wishes for good health to you and your family!
