The Society of American Foresters held their national convention in Hartford recently where they celebrated 125 years of forestry. A highlight of the convention was a technical tour of the McLean Game Refuge, a 4,400-acre nature preserve founded in 1932 by Senator George McLean. In addition to learning about conservation strategies and visiting two historic cabins on the property, the foresters enjoyed the spectacle of Canadian geese coming in for a rest stop on the pond near one of the cabins. Check out the video of geese circling in for a landing.

We invite you to help us continue conserving and maintaining the Game Refuge by donating to our Campaign for the McLean Game Refuge. Learn more at www.McLeanGameRefuge.org.

Caring for our community! McLean was thankful to be able to deliver a vanload and two carloads of nonperishable items (along with a few monetary donations) to the Simsbury Food Pantry today. McLean staff, residents, and friends donated during our recent food drive, and we were so happy to see so much generosity! If you would like to donate to the Simsbury Food Pantry this season, when food insecurity is a concern for many people, please reach out to the Simsbury Food Pantry at 860-658-3283.

Today at McLean we’re seeing the first snowfall of the winter season. It's a good time to remember that December brings slippery conditions. Visit our blog for some tips on how to prevent falls in the snow and ice!

Winter in New England means snow and ice. And we know that winter weather can lead to winter falls. Older adults are especially susceptible to these falls; in fact, the CDC website states that “Every second of every day, an older adult (age 65+) suffers a fall in the U.S.— making falls the leadi...

Planning a walk with your dog at the McLean Game Refuge this holiday weekend? Dogs are welcome year 'round, but they must be on a leash – and don’t forget to clean up after them!

Why leashes? It’s not just for other hikers’ and dogs’ safety. McLean is also protecting the wildlife and native plants that call the Game Refuge home. Off-leash dogs can get awfully curious about – and can unwittingly disrupt – what’s off the trail.

If you love walking your dog at the Game Refuge, we invite you to help us continue conserving and maintaining it by donating to our Campaign for the McLean Game Refuge. Learn more at www.McLeanGameRefuge.org.

McLean Hospice is providing home hospice services for “John’s” mother here in the Farmington Valley. John recently expressed that he and his family (including mom, who is still very sharp at age 100!) are grateful for "every single McLean person who comes through the door." John mentioned each McLean hospice worker by name and says the family feels "wonderfully supported."

John said the McLean Hospice team makes them feel that his mom is the only patient on its caseload – the team is that focused and present. “It’s like the rest of the world doesn’t exist.” John knows that we do serve other families, but because the McLean Hospice team is never in a rush, the whole family feels seen and heard and important.

Thank you for the kind words, John – we are grateful and proud to provide hospice services to your mom and to all of our patients.

We’re thankful for our amazing staff! Today was our annual “Thanks for Giving” breakfast, where leadership served doughnuts, bagels, scones, muffins, coffee, and more to all staff. November is the perfect time of year to tell staff how grateful McLean is for their dedication and service to our residents.
