Be sure to sign up for McLean’s latest educational program: “Your Voice, Your Choice: How to Talk to the Doctor About Your End-of-Life Wishes.” Reserve your spot at www.McLeanCare.org/events .

Learn the best ways to talk to your doctor – from a doctor – about your wishes for care through the end of life, so those wishes can be understood and respected. Join McLean’s Hospice Team including Dr. Kevin Baran, for a special presentation about how to have this conversation with your physician – and your family – to make sure your choices are clearly heard.

Over 90 percent of Americans agree that it’s important to talk to their loved ones about their wishes regarding end-of-life care, yet only 30 percent actually discuss this difficult topic. We plan for holidays, birthdays and vacations, but many of us have not planned for or discussed what we would like the end of our life to look like.

The event will be held at McLean’s Garmany Performing Arts Center at the Goodrich, 50 Sarah Lane, Simsbury, at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 11. The event is free but an RSVP is required – visit www.McLeanCare.org/events or call 860-658-3718.

This National Hospice Month, we’re pleased to introduce Reverend James S. Wheeler, McLean’s Hospice Chaplain. Reverend Jim, as he likes to be called, has spent his lifetime serving others, including 36 years as pastor of a church in the Farmington Valley and chaplaincy roles at Hartford Hospital, the Canton Fire Department, and the Connecticut Army National Guard. Over the years, he has supported firefighters, hospital patients, youth, service members, and now, individuals and families walking through the end-of-life journey.

A native of Long Island, Reverend Jim has called Connecticut home for 45 years. He and his wife, Judy (see here with Jim), live in Canton, where they raised their three children and now enjoy time with their three grandchildren. Family is at the heart of their life, and they love hosting holidays and celebrations that bring everyone together. When he’s not serving others, you’ll often find him outdoors - he’s an avid hiker who’s explored trails across New England, the Catskills, and the Rocky Mountains, finding peace and renewal in nature.

At McLean, Reverend Jim finds deep meaning in his work. “Each patient is unique,” he shares. “My role is to meet them where they are spiritually – whatever gives them strength or peace.” Known for his warmth and ability to connect across faiths, he helps patients explore what life and meaning look like at this stage, offering comfort through conversation, prayer, meditation, and presence. He describes the McLean Hospice team as “caring, positive, beautiful people”—a community he’s proud to have joined. McLean is proud have Rev. Jim on our hospice team.

Congratulations to our Independent Living resident Rick H!

Two years ago, Rick committed to living a healthier lifestyle and since then, he’s lost 30 pounds. He started Personal Training in our Boundless Wellness Gym and has been consistent ever since. Rick trains three times a week with our Boundless Wellness Director, Pascale Lean, and works out on his own on the other days.
He’s also made simple, lasting changes to his diet by focusing on portion control, eating more fish, and recently cutting back on alcohol. Rick’s dedication and success are an inspiration to all of us!

For more information about Boundless Wellness at McLean – and to learn about the limited number of community memberships available – call us at 860-658-3750.

November is National Hospice Care Month. McLean Hospice is proud of the 40 specially trained volunteers who provide socialization and companionship to people nearing the end of life. These dedicated volunteers complement hospice medical care by sharing gifts of time and compassion to show patients the dignity and respect they deserve. The volunteers find it gratifying to enhance a patient’s quality of life by holding a patient’s hand, reading aloud, using active listening, taking someone outside for fresh air, assisting in a life review, and sometimes simply being a quiet presence. For information about volunteering with McLean Hospice, please call 860-658-3907.
