We’re proud to be part of the America’s Poison Centers network as they announce a new, first-of-its-kind partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide, working together to reduce childhood poisonings and keep families safe.

This three-year collaboration will combine the power of poison data and community education to:
🔹 Identify emerging poisoning risks in young children
🔹 Create new research-based resources for families and healthcare providers
🔹 Strengthen community-level partnerships focused on safe medicine and product storage

Each year, Poison Centers respond to over 2 million exposure cases, more than half involving children and teens. Together, we’re helping make homes across the country safer for kids.

Halloween is a time for fun and festivities, but it's also important to keep safety top of mind. 🎃 Be aware of potential poisons that could put a damper on your celebrations.

Here are some substances to watch out for:

🍭Candy and treats: While most candy is safe, be cautious of homemade or exotic treats. Some candies, especially those from outside the U.S., may contain dangerous ingredients like xylitol (found in sugar-free gum) or heavy metals. Always inspect candy before letting kids eat it.
💄Costume makeup and accessories: Some Halloween cosmetics have been known to contain lead and other harmful ingredients. Opt for hypoallergenic makeup when possible, and follow instructions carefully. Remove makeup promptly after use.
🕸Decorations: Fake spider webs and other decorations may contain chemicals like methyl chloride. Keep these out of reach of pets and kids to avoid accidental ingestion.
🍶Alcohol and medications: Keep all adult beverages and medications locked away. Even small amounts can be dangerous if ingested by kids or pets.

The Iowa Poison Control Center is here to help, 24/7. If you suspect a poisoning, call us at 1-800-222-1222. Let's keep this Halloween safe and fun for all! 🛡️
