Before you walk into the funeral with your child, tell them what they're going to see and hear. Explain that people might be crying, and that's okay because they miss the person who died. Let them know the room will be quiet, and they'll see a casket or an urn at the front. If there's a viewing, describe what the person will look like so they're not startled. Tell them how long the service usually lasts and that they can sit with you the whole time.

Kids handle new situations better when they know what to expect, and funerals feel less scary when someone walks them through it first. We can walk you through what happens during the service so you know how to explain it to your child.
