April is C-section awareness month!
‼️Here’s the most common myths I hear: my pelvic floor is spared if I have a c-section…
Couldn’t be further from the truth! Your pelvic floor undergoes a great deal of strain during pregnancy. She’s working HARD y’all.
If you have an unplanned c-section, there’s a chance you pushed a bit during labor and then had surgery.
Whether planned or unplanned, your abdomen is cut into — 7 layers!! Your abdominal muscles are intimately related to pelvic health and will require rehabilitation, just like any muscle group after a major surgery.
And then you heal but those darn scars can get sticky. This can impact your bladder (hello leakage, urgency, discomfort), your bowels (constipation, pain, bloating), your fertility (painful periods, decreased organ mobility, painful secs), and even your posture 🤯
As a mom who’s experienced both types of deliveries, I learned that healing is just different. One is not better than the other, just different! It’s one of the most powerful lessons that I pass on to my patients who are fearful of a c-section! With proper preparation and rehab, your c-section experience can be smooth and empowering. 💗
