World Sleep Day reminder:

Rest isn’t a reward.
It’s a biological need.

Sleep affects:
• Mood
• Focus
• Emotional regulation
• Stress tolerance
• Anxiety levels
• Patience
• Everything, honestly

If you’ve been feeling “off,” your nervous system may not need motivation…

It may need sleep.

Women’s History Month is a moment to pause and recognize the stories, strength, and lived experiences that shape the world around us.

At Paula Lain Counseling & Co., our team is made up of women with diverse paths, perspectives, and identities, and we deeply value that diversity.

We asked each therapist to reflect on a simple but meaningful question:
What does being a woman mean to you?

Here are their answers.

Somewhere along the way, many women were taught to shrink, soften, question, accommodate, and doubt.

And somewhere along the way…
Many are remembering.

Remembering their voice.
Their boundaries.
Their worth.
Their space.

That shift changes everything.

Happy International Women’s Day 💚

Remember our 5-minute-a-day experiment? Instead of big resolutions, our team chose something smaller and more realistic: 5 minutes a day, for two weeks.

Kristy committed to stretching for a few minutes each day (preferably in the sunshine), and Ella focused on unplugging from her phone to listen to vinyl and journal about what she’s grateful for.

So… how did it actually go?

A little stretching.
A little gratitude.
And a reminder that small habits can shift your day.

Progress > perfection.

Paula’s goal was simple, bring a little more fun and energy into her day by dancing whenever she could sneak it in.

Did it happen perfectly? Of course not.
But small moments of joy still count.

Progress > perfection.

Remember our 5-minute-a-day experiment? Instead of big resolutions, our team chose something smaller and more realistic: 5 minutes a day, for two weeks.

Mari committed to moving her body between sessions instead of scrolling, and Rebecca started her mornings with a little singing to shift her energy.

So… how did it actually go?

A little movement.
A little music.
And a reminder that small habits can still make a difference.

Progress > perfection.

March has a funny reputation.
Everyone talks about growth like it’s loud, dramatic, and obvious.

But real growth?
It’s quieter than that.

It looks like awareness.
It looks like noticing.
It looks like small, honest shifts in how you think, feel, and respond.

Nothing flashy.
Nothing performative.
Just change happening in real time.

Dear February,

You had things to teach me about patience, about rest, about what I’ve been carrying a little too tightly.

I’m leaving behind self-judgment, unrealistic expectations, and the belief that I’m behind.

I’m choosing softer self-talk.
More patience, with myself and with others.
And a little more trust in where I am right now.

Nothing dramatic.
Nothing performative.
Just a quieter kind of growth and permission to move forward a little lighter.

Relationships aren’t measured by how often you get it right. They’re shaped by how you come back to each other.

A healthy connection isn’t the absence of conflict.
It’s feeling heard, respected, and safe enough to be honest, even when things are messy.

If your relationship feels tender, distant, or stuck right now, that doesn’t mean it’s broken. It means it might need support, not silence.

Winter has a way of making things feel heavier.

You can be functioning, laughing, showing up – and still feel the weight underneath. That contrast doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It means you're carrying more than one truth at the same time.

Joy and heaviness aren't opposites
They coexist. They overlap. They take turns.

If things feel a little off, a little weird, or more complicated to name right now, you're not failing. You're human... in a season that asks a lot of our nervous systems.

And you don't have to figure it out alone.

Thank you to Dakota News Now for having me on the New Year, New You segment! I’m so grateful for the chance to share about the work we do at Paula Lain Counseling and the ways we support teens and adults through anxiety, stress, perfectionism, and life’s everyday challenges.

We are honored to contribute a one-hour support counseling session to the New Year, New You Giveaway. Taking care of your mental health matters, and you don’t have to do it alone. 🤍

We’re skipping resolutions this year. Not because change doesn’t matter, but because real life does.

There’s a reason most New Year's promises don’t stick. Nearly 92% of resolutions are abandoned by the end of January, not because people are lazy, but because perfection is unsustainable.

So instead of aiming for big, shiny goals, our team is choosing something more realistic:
5 minutes a day, for two weeks.

No pressure.
No gold stars.
No doing it “right.”

Just small, intentional moments that support our energy, nervous systems, and well-being, done imperfectly.

✨ Check back with us in March for a follow-up post where we share how this actually went. Expect honesty, missed days, and a lot of grace.
