Medicare reimbursements are failing to keep pace with the costs of care and inflation. This gap is fueling the doctor shortage in South Dakota, especially in rural areas, putting access to care in many of our communities at risk. It's time for Congress to move past temporary fixes and develop a long-term solution to reform the Medicare payment system. Read SDSMA President Dr. Keith Hansen's column in South Dakota Searchlight about why Congress must act now.

Insufficient Medicare payments have forced too many physicians to make heartbreaking decisions. Some have had to stop accepting new Medicare patients.

Yesterday, SDSMA members — physicians and medical students from across the state — gathered in the Senate and House lobbies at the State Capitol for our 2026 Legislative Day. Our attendees spent the day advocating for patients and the medical profession. A huge thank you for showing up, speaking up, and advocating for a healthier South Dakota and protecting the practice of medicine!
