Electrolytes & EKG Changes

๐Ÿง‚ 1. Potassium (Kโบ) Changes

Hypokalemia (โ†“ Kโบ) โ€“ Blue section
โ€ข โ†“ ST segment (ST depression)
โ€ข Inverted T wave
โ€ข Prominent U wave
โžก May lead to arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia or torsades de pointes.
(Illustration shows U wave following the T wave.)

Hyperkalemia (โ†‘ Kโบ) โ€“ Blue section
โ€ข Tall, peaked T waves (first sign)
โ€ข Prolonged PR interval
โ€ข Widened QRS complex
โ€ข ST elevation โ†’ sine-wave pattern (severe)
โžก Risk: cardiac arrest.
(Illustration shows sharp, tall T wave.)

๐Ÿฆด 2. Calcium (Caยฒโบ) Changes

Hypocalcemia (โ†“ Caยฒโบ) โ€“ Green section
โ€ข Prolonged QT interval (due to long ST)
โ€ข Flat T wave
โ€ข Severe โ†’ torsades de pointes / ventricular tachycardia
(Illustration: QT interval markedly prolonged.)

Hypercalcemia (โ†‘ Caยฒโบ) โ€“ Green section
โ€ข Short QT interval (due to short ST)
โ€ข Wide or flattened T wave
โžก Rarely causes arrhythmia but suggests hyperparathyroidism or malignancy.
(Illustration: QT interval shortened.)

๐Ÿ’œ 3. Magnesium (Mgยฒโบ) Changes

Hypomagnesemia (โ†“ Mgยฒโบ) โ€“ Orange section
โ€ข โ†“ ST segment
โ€ข Inverted T wave
โ€ข Prolonged QT interval
โžก Often coexists with hypokalemia, increasing torsades de pointes risk.
(Illustration: prolonged QT with depressed ST.)

Hypermagnesemia (โ†‘ Mgยฒโบ) โ€“ Orange section
โ€ข Prolonged PR interval
โ€ข Widened QRS complex
โžก Severe โ†’ heart block or asystole.
(Illustration: extended PR and widened QRS.)

๐Ÿ’ก Overall Concept
โ€ข Kโบ affects T waves & QRS (muscle excitability)
โ€ข Caยฒโบ affects QT duration (contractile timing)
โ€ข Mgยฒโบ stabilizes rhythm (modulates Kโบ & Caยฒโบ)

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, contributing to about 80% of cases. Quitting, or avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke, is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk.

You can also protect yourself by limiting exposure to radon, asbestos and other known cancer-causing agents.

Because symptoms often donโ€™t appear until later stages, early detection can save lives. The American Cancer Society recommends yearly lung screenings for adults ages 50 to 80 who currently smoke or used to, and have at least a 20 pack-year history of smoking.

ECG (Electrocardiogram) waves and what each wave represents in the cardiac cycle.

๐Ÿซ€ 1. P-Wave
โ€ข Origin: SA node generates a spontaneous action potential.
โ€ข Meaning: Atrial depolarization โ€“ the electrical activity that causes the atria to contract and push blood into the ventricles.
โ€ข Diagram: Arrows show contraction in both atria (upper chambers).

โšก 2. PR Segment
โ€ข Process: After atrial depolarization, the signal reaches the AV node and slows down briefly.
โ€ข Purpose: This short delay allows the atria to complete contraction and the ventricles to fill with blood before they contract.
โ€ข Diagram: Shows electrical conduction pause between atria and ventricles.

โค๏ธ 3. QRS Complex
โ€ข Pathway: The impulse travels through the Bundle of His โ†’ right and left bundle branches โ†’ Purkinje fibers.
โ€ข Meaning: Ventricular depolarization โ€“ ventricles contract to pump blood to the lungs and the rest of the body.
โ€ข Diagram: Green-shaded ventricles showing contraction.

๐Ÿ’œ 4. T-Wave
โ€ข Meaning: Ventricular repolarization โ€“ recovery phase when the ventricles relax and prepare for the next beat.
โ€ข Diagram: Ventricles shown relaxing (green filling back in).
