1. Don’t let anyone say it's crazy to be grieving the loss of a pet. Intense grief is natural and normal when losing a beloved member of the family.
2. Don’t expect to feel grief in only one way. Grief isn’t just one emotion. It is unique to everyone and comes in different ways, and lasts different amounts of time.
3. Honor their life in one way or another. For many, skipping this step inhibits the chance to begin the healing process.
4. Remember other pets can also grieve the loss. Make sure to give them extra love, attention and care.
5. Share feelings and emotions with a close, pet-friendly, friend. There's not need to grieve alone, and remember to practice self-care.

Some ways to honor your loved one on their birthday, an anniversary date, holiday and more...
- Bring flowers to their final resting place, or simply go for a visit
- Listen to a voicemail they've left you or a video recording
- Do one of their "favorites" - watch a movie, attend their church, grab a scoop or two of their favorite ice cream
- Get creative - make art, sing, play an instrument
- Send part of their cremated remains to be made into a tree, jewelry, etc.
- Write them a letter
- Make a donation in their honor

A grief poem by Rudyard Kipling we thought may be helpful today --

For a season there must be pain -
For a little, little space
I shall lose the sight of her face,
Take back the old life again
While She is at rest in the place.
For a season this pain must endure,
For a little, little while
I shall sigh more often than smile
Till Time shall work me a cure,
And the pitiful days beguile.
For that season we must be apart,
For a little length of years,
Till my life's last hour nears,
And, above the beat of my heart,
I hear Her voice in my ears.
But I shall not understand -
Being set on some later love,
Shall not know her for whom I strove,
Till she reach me forth her hand,
Saying, "Who but I have the right?"
And out of a troubled night
Shall draw me safe to the land.
