The link between our detox pathways supported by our liver and our mental health are a big deal. 📣🥦🩺🧠

The liver is our body’s primary detox organ. Every day, it processes hormones, medications, alcohol, environmental toxins, and metabolic waste. When it’s overwhelmed or sluggish, those compounds don’t just disappear—they circulate.

And that matters for your brain…🧐

• Hormone balance → The liver helps break down estrogen and other hormones. When this process is impaired, hormone imbalances can contribute to anxiety, irritability, and mood swings.

• Inflammation → A stressed liver can contribute to systemic inflammation, which is increasingly linked to depression and brain fog.

• Blood sugar regulation → The liver plays a key role in stabilizing blood sugar. Dysregulation can lead to energy crashes, irritability, and worsened anxiety.

• Toxin clearance → When detox pathways are sluggish, toxins may accumulate and affect neurotransmitter function, impacting mood, focus, and clarity.

• Gut-liver-brain axis → The liver works closely with the gut. Disruption in this system can influence everything from serotonin production to stress response.

So what supports both liver and mental health?

• Prioritize whole, unprocessed foods
• Support stable blood sugar (protein, fiber, healthy fats)
• Limit alcohol and ultra-processed sugar
• Stay hydrated
• Move your body regularly
• Get quality sleep
• Reduce toxin exposure where possible

Support the liver, support the brain.

🙋‍♀️As hormone replacement gains more traction, many women are being prescribed micronized oral progesterone.

🧠Many women benefit from oral micronized progesterone for sleep, anxiety, premenstrual symptoms, and endometrial protection during hormone therapy—but not everyone tolerates it well.

🛑As oral progesterone is metabolized in the liver the first pass effect transforms into the metabolite allopregnenolone, which is a potent promoter of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter). For some women, too much GABA can lead to grogginess, brain fog, sedation, dizziness, or mood changes.

Potential alternatives to discuss with your clinician:

• Lower dose oral progesterone – Sometimes symptoms improve with dose adjustments.📉

• Vaginal progesterone – Often better tolerated because it bypasses first-pass liver metabolism.

• Progesterone creams or compounded topical formulations – May be helpful for some individuals, though absorption can vary.

• Cyclic progesterone instead of nightly dosing – Some patients tolerate periodic dosing better.🗓️

• Addressing underlying factors – Blood sugar swings, stress, and poor sleep can amplify progesterone side effects.🙆‍♀️

📈Hormone therapy should be personalized. If progesterone isn’t working for you, it doesn’t mean hormone therapy isn’t an option—it simply means the approach may need adjusting

When strength training, we’re not only building muscle… we’re increasing blood flow to the brain, stimulating new neural connections, and supporting memory and focus. Resistance training has been shown to:

🧠Improve executive function & decision-making
🧠Reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression
🧠Support cognitive health as we age
🧠Enhance sleep (which further protects the brain)
🧠Boost confidence and stress resilience

Hormonal shifts across the lifespan — from postpartum to perimenopause and beyond — can impact mood and cognition. Strength training helps regulate blood sugar, lower inflammation, and support hormonal balance, all of which protect brain health.

AND…proving to yourself that you can lift heavy things and overcome temporary discomfort is a powerful way to boost resilience and confidence.
