Shore took this day to recognize the over 70 employees who work tirelessly to carry out our mission to improve the quality of life for the over 200 individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities every day. 75 Years - One Brilliant Story

Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll be highlighting important “chapters” of this story that make up the rich history and legacy of Shore Community Services, and our community’s commitment to inclusion over 75 years!

This week’s chapter features the NIMBY (Not in My Backyard) phenomenon that Shore faced while developing its first housing program. The Patricia Lloyd Townhomes were envisioned as a supportive community for those with developmental disabilities to live independently in the community. Ahead of its time, the Townhomes project met fierce opposition from Evanston neighbors at the time. Rooted in fear and misunderstanding of their future neighbors, a small group of residents fought to prevent the development of the Townhomes. But many more Evanston residents vocally supported this effort!

Although a difficult part of our history, it’s important to reflect on how far our community has come in fully supporting inclusive solutions for independent living. Today, the Patricia Lloyd Townhomes still operates as affordable rental housing for people with intellectual disabilities, and Shore has since opened several other residences to support individuals to live independently.

(*Shore removed the r-word from its name in 1987, because it evolved from a clinical diagnosis into a dehumanizing slur. Replacing it with person-first language like "intellectual disability" ensures dignity and respect for everyone.)
