75 Years - One Brilliant Story

Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll be highlighting important “chapters” of this story that make up the rich history and legacy of Shore Community Services, and our community’s commitment to inclusion over 75 years!

🏅 This week’s chapter features the Special Olympics! In 1983, Shore School participated in the Special Olympics games in Dyche Stadium (now Ryan Field) on the Northwestern University campus.* Shore athletes participated in the softball throw, 50-yard dash, and the 220-yard run.

Did you know that the Special Olympics has a special history in Chicago? Founded in 1968, the first International Summer Games were held on July 20th at Soldier Field. The first games were a joint effort between the Chicago Park District and the Kennedy Foundation, and welcomed about 1,000 athletes from the U.S. and Canada.

(*Shore removed the r-word from its name in 1987, because it evolved from a clinical diagnosis into a dehumanizing slur. Replacing it with person-first language like "intellectual disability" ensures dignity and respect for everyone.)

Rainbow krispies, oh what a treat! The individuals in the Life In Motion - Your Choice Program made a delicious treat as week to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. They mixed melted marshmallows with Fruity Pebbles in a bowl, let it set, and had an instant treat. Yummy!

75 Years - One Brilliant Story

Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll be highlighting important “chapters” of this story that make up the rich history and legacy of Shore Community Services, and our community’s commitment to inclusion over 75 years!

This week’s chapter features the important advocacy work that Shore has been involved in from the beginning. Since our founding, Shore has made it a priority to advocate at all levels of government to create policies that protect the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities to access quality education, employment, and housing.

In 1983, Shore participated in a statewide action opposing Governor Thompson’s funding cuts to agencies serving people with disabilities. Shore shut down programming for one day in protest, along with other organizations across the state, to dramatize the impact of funding cuts.

“It took 40 years of hard work to develop programs for r* citizens, and the governor can undo those efforts in less than one year,” said Gerald Gulley, then Executive Director.

Today, advocacy is still an important part of how Shore carries out its mission. We are involved at local, state, and federal levels to ensure that the hard-won human rights and resources to support individuals remain in place, and continue to grow.

(*Shore removed the r-word from its name in 1987, because it evolved from a clinical diagnosis into a dehumanizing slur. Replacing it with person-first language like "intellectual disability" ensures dignity and respect for everyone.)

Everything's turning up green at the Lois Lloyd Center! Michael, Diane and their friends have been working on St. Patrick's Day art projects like this mural during the month. They decided where to place shamrocks to highlight the big pot of gold. Glenn Tatsui, Direct Support Professional, stands with Michael and Diane in front of the finished mural. They all wore green hats to highlight the upcoming holiday.
