Chicago Polyamory Support Group

Last month we touched on some of the feelings and anxieties that can be connected with meeting your partner’s partner(s). I have been thinking about the uncertainties that come when we meet and when we separate from metamours.

These relationships hold the promise of enriching our lives and expanding our sense of belonging, family or tribe. But, they also come with risks; conflict, jealousy, and loss, to name a few.

We transition, evolve, ebb and flow in and out of these connections. Sometimes the coming and going is casual, unintentional or unremarkable. Sometimes the start or end of a relationship is heralded by unusual, uncanny or exceptionally complicated and sometimes painful events.

What’s your experience? What do you worry or wonder about when first getting to know metamours? Maybe there is one big recurring anxiety that grips you each time there is someone new to meet and get to know? What kinds of situations or feelings have you found most troubling when your relationship or your partner’s relationship to a metamour changes or ends?

Join us in June for conversation and community.

March topic: The Hinge Position -- Joys and Challenges of Being in the Middle
I still remember the first time I sat between two partners who loved me. It was an intense and joyous experience filled with so much healing. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, this is how life should be! This is how I was meant to be!”

While having multiple partners has brought great joy into my life, I can easily admit that it has also brought great pain as well. I quickly found that being in the role of the “hinge” (the person between two partners) had many challenges that I was not well-equipped for. I often wondered, how do I make everyone happy?? (spoiler alert: you can’t).

Being the hinge often requires navigating many areas of difficulty: time spent/scheduling, communication of information, conflicting needs/boundaries. Does this sound familiar? How have you dealt with being the hinge and managing expectations? What joys has it brought you? What struggles have you faced?
