Wee Apps Speech Pathologist

We haven't posted in awhile. Working to introduce an exciting app that is in production mode. In the meantime, here is an app that we like:

Mad Libs
By Penguin Group USA

Check out the Mad Libs app. Who doesn't love making silly sentences? The app helps enhance your child's grammar skills by learning about nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and much more! The app can also be used to target speech sounds. Have your child circle words with his or her speech sound. After playing the Mad Libs app, have your child create a Mad Libs story. The app is free.

Next App review...Animal Zoo by TabTale

Take a virtual walk through the zoo and visit many animals! This is a new app by Tab Tale, maker of many interactive storybooks (many free as well!). Each page contains one animal with its habitat in the background along with the written animal name. When you touch the animal, it moves and produces its natural sound. In addition to learning the names and sounds of over 20 animals, you can use the app to further increase expressive language skills, such as:
• Increase descriptive vocabulary: talk about how the animals look using descriptive words such as ‘it has a long, bushy tail’ or ‘it has black and white stripes.” Include color and number words. You can even describe the environment around the animal (i.e. has large gray boulders, has trees to shade the animal, blue water to swim in and cool them off)
• Go further in describing what group the animal belongs to (i.e. mammal, amphibian, nocturnal) what the animal likes to do (swim, hunt, sleep!), what it eats, how it moves (i.e. a snail inches along slowly, a snake slithers through the grass on the ground, a lion runs quickly on four legs to catch its prey).
• Increase animal body part vocabulary: beside feathers, fur and tail, how about mane, whiskers and tusks?

Who do YOU use this app with and HOW? Please leave a comment!
