Phelps Hospital is part of Northwell Health, the largest health system in New York State. With 1,700 employees and nearly 600 medical staff members representing 60 medical specialties, Phelps offers one of the broadest ranges of community hospital services in Westchester County. Patients benefit from access to the latest technology and advanced procedures performed by distinguished physicians, man

y of whom are pioneers in their field. Phelps' primary and specialty care medical group, Phelps Medical Associates, has practices conveniently located on the hospital campus and in the surrounding communities. Spine surgery firsts include the first total disc replacement (Charite III) and the first artificial cervical spine disk implantation. In 1969, the first hip replacement in Westchester was performed at Phelps, and in 2005, a Phelps physician performed the first anterior approach hip replacement in the Northeast. Phelps established the first sleep center in the county and has the largest hyperbaric chamber in the Northeast. The maternal child center was the first to provide hearing testing for infants and to offer hepatitis B vaccinations to all newborns. The Phelps Emergency Department, constructed less than three years ago, has 32 private rooms, a pediatric section featuring a playroom, and a dedicated radiology suite. At the hospital’s Hoch Center for Emergency Education, training is provided for EMTs, paramedics, and other healthcare providers. Students come from every corner of Westchester County, indeed, from across the globe to benefit from the hands-on simulation-based training provided at the Center. Plans are under way to establish Northwell Health Cancer Institute at Phelps, bringing together comprehensive cancer services including multidisciplinary treatment, full-service screening, and diagnostic and support services under one roof. The institute’s expert cancer physicians are disease-focused and dedicated to bringing the most advanced treatments to patients.

As we celebrate Earth Day, we found it fitting to spotlight our Serenity Garden here at Phelps Hospital, a calming space created to support behavioral health and overall well-being.

One year since breaking ground, it means so much to us to see this space bloom into a place of reflection, recovery, and peace which is exactly what we hand in mind as this was designed to provide patients, families, and staff with a restorative connection to the outdoors, the garden offers a quiet moment of respite when it’s needed most.

Even in healthcare, nature plays such an important role in healing!

Congratulations to our hospital President Beata Mastalerz, as she will receive the 2026 Hall of Fame Women in Business Success Award from the Business Council of Westchester (BCW)!

Since joining Phelps in 2024, Beata has driven several major initiatives including expanded cancer, digestive health, neurosurgery and spine services.

Additionally, our hospital has increased surgical capacity by 31% in just two years — a reflection of her background and experience as a preoperative nurse leader — and expanded its roster of premiere surgeons offering the most advanced procedures in Westchester.

ICYMI: Last month here at Phelps Hospital, experts from across Northwell Health and Westchester County came together for the 3rd Annual Early-Onset Cancer Symposium to help advance the conversation around cancers diagnosed before age 50 which are on the rise.

From global research to personal patient stories, the day highlighted a critical shift happening across oncology.

Since early-onset cancers are rising, our team knows how important it is to focus on understanding their causes—from genetics to environmental and lifestyle factors—while advancing risk-based screening and expanding access for those under 50.

Our care continues to evolve through a multidisciplinary approach that prioritizes both treatment and long-term quality of life, fueling greater awareness and a shared goal of making Northwell Health one of the most proactive and well-screened systems in the area.

As Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month rolls on, our very own Parul Shukla, MD, Colon & Re**al Surgery, joined Westchester County Executive Kenneth W. Jenkins and Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler to address a growing concern: the rise of colorectal cancer in younger adults.

Colorectal cancer is now one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in people under 50, yet it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when caught early.

As said by Dr. Shukla: “Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when caught early. Timely screening saves lives, yet too many people delay because of fear, lack of awareness, or access. This March, we want everyone to know that screening is simple, effective and more accessible than ever. Taking that first step can truly be life-saving.”

New York State faced a record-setting number of flu hospitalizations during the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. Experts say this is driven by multiple factors, including low vaccination rates at this point in the flu season, and a new, potentially more contagious flu strain — a mutated version of H3N2 called subclade K.

Head to the link below to learn about the importance of preventative measures to protect against the flu from our Phelps Hospital Physicians.
