“Our healthcare systems are once again feeling the brunt of COVID-19,” said Cooper. “While our emergency rooms are ready to provide necessary assistance, they are not equipped to provide routine COVID-19 testing. While the symptoms of the Omicron variant are milder, hospitalizations are up and citizens should take necessary steps to mitigate the stress on our healthcare system.”
Local hospitals have reported an influx of residents utilizing emergency departments for COVID-19 testing. Additionally, EMS and local firefighters have revealed an increase in calls for mild symptoms.
“If an emergency situation arises, we encourage all citizens to utilize 911, ambulatory services and emergency rooms,” said Dr. Preston. “However, asymptomatic residents or those with mild symptoms should not seek emergency care.”
