On Saturday, September 6, Smithfield Foods sponsored a picnic for their staff and the members of SVFD. As part of that event, Shane Smith, CEO of Smithfield Foods, presented the final check to the department for the purchase of Truck 50 and E50, thereby completing a seven-year commitment from Smithfield Foods. It is a blessing to have great corporate partners like Smithfield Foods that support the community and the volunteer fire service, enabling us to acquire quality equipment to perform our duties.

SVFD hosts Water Rescue Technician Class

Your Smithfield and Isle of Wight County Volunteers were hard at work this weekend, attending the Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) Surface and Flood Water Rescue Technician Class, hosted by Station 50. This class focuses on the fundamental skills and tactics of rescuing victims in flood and slow moving water emergencies. There were a total of 12 Students to include eight SVFD members, two members from Carrollton VFD, one from Carsville VFD, and one career member from James City County. All twelve students successfully completed the course, adding to the county’s capability and capacity to respond to water emergencies. The class was taught by four VA State certified instructors to include two of our very own members. SVFD would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Luter Family YMCA for allowing the class to utilize their pool for portions of the hands on training.

The SVFD is continuously improving to meet the needs of our community. If you’re looking to make a difference by joining our ranks, please reach out or stop by the firehouse located at 1804 S. Church Street!

Multi-Company Work on Courthouse Highway

At one minute past Four PM on Sunday afternoon, the Smithfield volunteers were dispatched for a reported passenger vehicle on fire on courthouse highway. Engine 51 staffed with four, and Deputy Chief 502, immediately responded to the originally reported address at the IOWC courthouse. While en route, the address was updated as being further down Route 258 in Windsor VFDs first due district. This updated information added Station 40 units to the run who responded with an Engine and Tanker. Engine 40, a Windsor Assistant Chief and 502 were amongst the first on scene with Engine 51 arriving closely behind. Finding a single SUV well involved with fire on the roadway, both Company 40 and 50 personnel worked together to bring the fire under control and mitigate all hazards to the public and environment. Route 258 was temporarily closed due to fire suppression efforts. Company 50 units were returned to service upon extinguishment which occurred within approximately 25 minutes of arrival. The vehicle, unfortunately, was determined to be a total loss. There were no reported injuries to civilians or Fire Personnel.

We are proud to serve the citizens of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County alongside our fellow Fire and Emergency Services Agencies.

Responding Units: 502, Engine 51, Engine 40, Tanker 40.
