James Alvin “Al” Jones
James Alvin Jones, 56, of Smithfield, Virginia, passed away on March 8, 2026, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
James was born in Smithfield, Virginia, to Isaiah Jones Sr. and Clara E. Jones. He was the youngest of 10 children, a role that brought him much love from his family throughout his life. He attended Smithfield High School and graduated in 1989.
James was known for his remarkable ability to fix just about anything. Even after a previous injury left him with the use of only one arm, he never let it slow him down. He continued helping others by repairing and building things whenever needed, earning admiration from everyone who knew him.
During his high school years, James, along with his brother Bryant Jones and best friend Steven Wells, formed a group called “Big Bubba and the Bully Boys.” The group became well known throughout the school and community for their entertaining skits and performances. They were loved by many and brought laughter and joy wherever they performed.
James was a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan, a passion that began when his brother Isaiah introduced him to the team. From that moment on, he proudly supported the Dolphins and enjoyed talking football with family and friends.
James loved the Lord and was a member of Galilee Baptist Church, where he worshipped faithfully under the leadership of Reverend Dr. James A. Jones. His faith in God was an important part of his life and helped guide him through both joyful and challenging times.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving mother, Clara E. Jones; his children, Brandee Moody (Ona), Autum Jones, and Winter Jones; and his cherished granddaughter, Onalysah Moody; his beloved partner in life, Samantha Hurst and stepdaughter Simnay Jones.
He also shared a very special bond with his niece, Jennifer Jones, whom he loved dearly and remained extremely close to throughout his life, and a devoted cousin Donny Beckwith who he knew he could always count on, as their bond was unbreakable.
James is also survived by; his brothers, Isaiah Jones Jr. (Anne Marie), Larry Jones (Pam), Elanda Jones and Bryant Jones (Stacy); his sisters, Gwendolyn Perry (James) and Amanda Williams (Ralph); along with a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
James was preceded in death by his father, Isaiah Jones Sr., his brother Ronnie Jones, and his sisters Annie Jones and Clarice Thomas.
Though he may be gone from our sight, James’ laughter, resilience, and the joy he brought to those around him will live forever in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
