It was such a good question and I wasn’t sure exactly how to answer. After some thought, here’s what I wish I had said:
For babies: I wish parents knew how important their baby’s gut health is and how it will impact his or her health for their entire life. Yes, it is that important. And mom’s diet is KEY at this phase too.
For toddlers: I wish parents knew how important food play and exposure is, and how removing pressure at the table actually allows kids to feel safe trying new foods. i also wish they knew that the strategies their own parents used, will likely not work for their own child.
Elementary age: I wish parents knew that ADHD, asthma, allergies, and anxiety are all directly impacted by the gut. While we may not be able to completely reverse these diagnoses, we can prevent and support through nutrition.
For teens: I wish parents knew that we can’t yet dial it in—we still have to watch and monitor and support these big kids either their nutrition. And if they are parenting an athlete, this becomes even MORE important.
I also wish parents knew that the most important way kids learn is through observation. If they see their parents taking care of themselves and nourishing their bodies with food, they will be much more likely to do the same.
