🇧🇬Bulgaria has a long history of producing aromatic plants, but after the fall of Communism much of the country’s essential oil industry declined. Many farmers stopped growing aromatic crops and shifted to other agriculture as distilleries disappeared and opportunities became limited.

🤗To help restore this tradition, dōTERRA established Esseterre Bulgaria in 2015, a farming and distillation operation located in Dobrich in eastern Bulgaria. Today, Esseterre is one of the largest distilleries in the country and plays an important role in producing oils such as Lavender and Melissa, which thrive in the region’s sunny climate and well-drained soils.

The location was chosen strategically so that crops can be distilled quickly after harvest, which is especially important for delicate plants like Melissa. This helps preserve the quality of the essential oil.

🌏Vetiver essential oil begins its journey in southwestern Haiti, where the roots of Vetiver grass are carefully harvested and distilled. Through dōTERRA’s Co-Impact Sourcing initiative, farmer cooperatives have been established in the region, creating greater stability and new opportunities for local growers.

👩‍🌾Farmers receive training in sustainable cultivation, including how to propagate Vetiver roots so the grass continues to grow year after year. They also learn improved planting and harvesting methods that help increase both the quality and yield of the essential oil. To produce the best oil possible, farmers are encouraged to allow the roots to mature for at least 12 months before harvest. Higher-quality roots can earn additional premiums, and a traceability system helps identify the best crops.

🏝The Hawaiian Islands are known for their volcanic landscapes and incredibly rich soil, which makes them an ideal place for many unique plant species to grow. One of the most treasured is Hawaiian Sandalwood.

For centuries, Sandalwood has been valued for its warm, calming aroma. Unfortunately, heavy harvesting in the past led to major declines in native Sandalwood forests across Hawaii.

🙂Today, a different approach is being taken.

Through the Kealakekua Mountain Reserve (KMR) on the Big Island, doTERRA works alongside local partners to help restore and protect native Sandalwood forests. This large conservation and reforestation project focuses on carefully managing the land, protecting existing trees, and planting thousands of new ones to support the long-term health of the ecosystem.

Early harvesting efforts primarily relied on dead or naturally fallen trees, allowing younger trees time to grow and regenerate. Extensive nurseries and ongoing planting programs continue to expand the native forest.

💚The goal is not only to produce Sandalwood essential oil, but also to restore native Hawaiian forests and ensure these trees thrive for generations to come.
