🌸 Women’s History Month | Honoring Women in Medicine

Dr. Helen Brooke Taussig is widely recognized as the founder of pediatric cardiology.

She co-developed the groundbreaking “blue baby” procedure, which successfully treated infants born with congenital heart defects and saved countless lives. Her work helped establish modern cardiac care for children.

Despite facing significant challenges, including partial deafness, Dr. Taussig’s perseverance and dedication to research transformed pediatric medicine.

This Women’s History Month, we honor the women whose courage and innovation continue to shape healthcare today.

💛 Supporting Our Community Through Uncertain Times

This week, the County of Monterey Board of Supervisors took swift action to ensure our residents continue to have access to food during the federal government shutdown. The Board approved an urgency allocation of $150,000 to support our local food bank and help families who rely on SNAP/CalFresh benefits throughout November.

This one-time funding will bridge the gap as federal contingency funds are processed — ensuring that over 51,000 local residents, including 29,000 children, have the food they need.

We encourage our community partners, organizations, and local jurisdictions to share this important information and, if possible, join the County in pledging funds to strengthen food access across Monterey County.

Together, we can make sure no one goes hungry. 🍎💚

🍽️🤝 Today, Soledad Community Health Care District had the pleasure of joining Soledad Unified School District for a “Lunch & Learn” focused on strengthening the connection between health and education in our community.

We were joined by representatives from adult education, career training, the Family Resource Center, and school nurses. On our end, three of our providers participated, along with clinic front desk staff, our clinic operations manager, nursing team, and Board President Graig Stephens. The conversation was led by our CEO, Ida Lopez Chan, and centered around supporting students interested in healthcare careers, as well as ways our providers can connect patients with valuable school-based resources.

A heartfelt thank you to the Family Resource Center for hosting us, giving us a tour of their incredible space, and allowing room for these meaningful conversations. We left feeling inspired—and some of us may even join them for an evening yoga session soon! 🧘‍♀️✨

Together, we’re building bridges to uplift the Soledad community through health, education, and collaboration.
