Joyce A. (Coner) Thompson, 88, of Franklin, IN passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at Aspen Trace Senior Living in Greenwood, IN. She was born October 7, 1937 in Detroit, MI to John and Elma Lee (Garner) Coner.
Joyce grew up in Detroit before moving to the family farm in Nancy, KY. She was the eldest of eight siblings. When she was just a year shy for permission, she met James “Jim” Thompson from a nearby town. He worked at a local gas station and that’s when romance began. Jim moved to Franklin, IN for employment at Arvin Automotive, leaving Joyce behind, during this one year courtship Jim went to visit Joyce 50 weekends out of 52. Once permission was granted, they were married, Joyce moved to Franklin with Jim, and began her 57 year career beginning as a Nurse’s Aid and finishing as a Microbiologist in the hospital Lab at Johnson Memorial Hospital. Yes, 57 years, a work ethic unknown in today’s world.
Joyce and Jim were married 63 years before Jim passed away on April 10, 2016. She was a member of Amity Baptist Church, Psi Iota Xi sorority, Investment Club, Union Village Eastern Star #584, and the Red Hat Society.
Joyce loved to travel and stay on the go, she had season tickets to Beef and Boards dinner theatre, Starlight Musicals, The Little Nashville Opry, and she was a regular at Walt Disney World, took numerous cruises, went to Hawaii several times and went on a once-in-a-lifetime European cruise thru the Mediterranean.
She offered hospitality, sometimes living quarters, food, often advice, and love beyond compare to her siblings and their spouses, and duly noted was the “Queen of Clean”!
Survivors include her two boys J. Larry (Dee) Thompson, of Franklin, IN, Jeffery Lee (Lisa) Thompson of Franklin, IN, two granddaughters Christina (Eric), Leanna (Justin), and two grandsons Josh (Carly) and Kenny (Jessica), nine great-grandchildren Taylor, Isabelle, Lyla, Adeline, Mason Lee, Karter, Cora, Cameron, and Charli. She has lots of nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Joyce is also survived by her siblings, J.D. (Eleanor) Coner, Linville Coner, Ronald (Dana), Robert Coner, David (Judy) Coner, all of Franklin, IN, Norma Jean (Roy) Frye, of Nancy KY, and Janice Dye, of Nancy KY.
