New Jersey Assemblywoman Shama Haider (NJ State House Tours) visit to CGE offered a meaningful opportunity to highlight the organization’s mission and the critical role it plays for women across the state. Her thoughtful engagement and clear understanding of CGE’s work underscored how closely her leadership as Chair of the Children, Families & Food Security Committee aligns with the services CGE provides—supporting homeless pregnant and parenting individuals and families through trauma‑informed care, substance use and mental health services, and comprehensive wraparound support that helps build healthier futures for mothers and their children.

Assemblywoman Haider joins our champion Assemblyman Joe Danielsen who has been advocating for CGE for over three years, securing legislative appropriations which are critical to funding for our work.

We are committed to enlightening the entire body of State legislators to the resources available for addressing New Jersey’s maternal health crisis. With 58% of maternal mortality cases in the first year postpartum associated with substance use disorders, CGE is a critical resource in reducing and preventing maternal deaths and improving outcomes for families statewide.

Mamie Phipps Clark revealed the truth science could no longer ignore.

At a time when racism was normalized and children’s pain was dismissed, she showed how segregation damages young minds. Through rigorous research and a deep commitment to community, she documented the psychological harm of inequality and turned evidence into action.

As a psychologist and civil rights researcher, her work helped dismantle legal segregation, challenged the myth of racial neutrality, and affirmed that children deserve dignity in order to thrive.

Her legacy reminds us: justice is a mental health issue, and truth can heal.

This is where relational healing begins, in the family room. A mother and her child bond together through play or curled up on the couch reading together. Time spent together in a safe, welcoming environment creates a path to positive outcomes.

Special thanks to Msgr. Joseph Curry, Eileen, and the team at Mary, Mother of God R.C. Church, Hillsborough NJ for hosting the 16th Annual Diaper Bowl.
Each year parishioners are asked to pick the winning Super Bowl team by donating either Huggies or Pampers brand diapers.
They have been correct 82% of the time!
This year the Seattle SeaHUGGIES took on the New England PaMPERS.
It was a bit of a blowout with donations totaling 2,457 Huggies over 1,100 Pampers diapers!
For those who don't follow sports the final Super Bowl score was Seattle 29 and New England 13.

Maxie Clarence Maultsby Jr. believed emotional health could be learned.

Long before “self-help” and “coping skills” became common language, he taught people how to train their minds with clarity, responsibility, and self-respect. Drawing from cognitive therapy, he developed practical tools that made emotional wellness more accessible, especially for those excluded from traditional care.

As a psychiatrist, educator, and innovator, he centered empowerment over pathology and recovery over shame. His work reminds us: healing is a skill, and it can be taught.

Like homes everywhere, the mothers at CGE are proud of their children, showing off their artwork on the refrigerator for all to see. This positive affirmation sends a clear message to the children, you are loved and your mother stands with you.

Bebe Moore Campbell changed the conversation.

Long before mental health was openly discussed, she spoke honestly about mental illness in Black families. Through storytelling, lived experience, and courage, she helped break stigma.

As a mother, author, and advocate, she humanized bipolar disorder, challenged harmful myths, and called for compassionate, culturally informed care. Her work helped pave the way for and today’s Black mental health movement.

Her legacy reminds us: healing begins when we speak.
