An interesting thing happens in my inboxes anytime I share facts about alcohol.

I start getting messages like this -

“I’m over all this scare mongering. You don’t know anything about me.”

“Why would you share that with me? My life is my business. You can’t make me change.”

“How dare you try to use fear tactics! I thought This Naked Mind was different!”

Here’s the truth. Sharing facts isn’t fear mongering. It’s not a scare tactic and my intention is not to force change on anyone. But the truth is, all change happens on the other side of awareness. And we can’t become aware of the dangers of alcohol if we don’t know the facts around it.

Facts like -

Alcohol is a highly addictive drug. It’s actually been labeled as the most harmful drug out there in numerous studies. I don’t conduct or fund those studies. I have no agenda in them but I do feel it’s important to open people up to that fact.

Alcohol is the most regularly used addictive substance in America, with 1 out of every 12 adults suffering from an alcohol abuse or dependency issue based upon research from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). In the UK, alcohol misuse is the biggest risk factor for death, ill-health and disability among 15-49 year-olds, and the fifth biggest risk factor across all ages.

When we know better we do better. So here's to knowing everything we can about alcohol and bettering our choices around that knowledge.

When we picture someone who needs to cut back or stop drinking, a certain image comes to mind.

Seldom does that image scream high-powered professional, stay-at-home mom, or average person just like you or me.

What we envision is an almost sinister image. Someone passed out at the bar, pulled over and in handcuffs, or surrounded by empty bottles and broken dreams. We never think that it will be someone sitting on their back porch with a wine glass in their hand.

Knowing if your routine drinking might be an issue can be a challenge. There is an abundance of conflicting information out there. How can we know who to listen to and what choices truly are best for us when it comes to our relationships with alcohol?

So many people drink to calm nerves, but it's really only fueling their anxiety. So... what can you drink to relax instead of alcohol? Does that mystical beverage truly exist?

Yes, yes they do. In fact, there are quite a few drinks that will not only help alleviate stress and anxiety but also won't come with the rebound anxiety that alcohol causes.

I'm a big fan of green tea. L-theanine amino acids in green tea have been shown to promote relaxation. Decaf is a great option at night.

Tart cherry juice or tea can boost melatonin levels which also helps you relax and fall asleep quicker. It also naturally has such a great taste.

Finally - don't rule out the benefits of a warm mug of water with lemon. Just the scent of lemon has a calming effect on the nervous system and combating dehydration is so important when it comes to overcoming stress and anxiety.

What are you sipping?

April is known as Alcohol Awareness Month.

Alcohol and all the reasons we "should" drink it are always being shoved in our faces. From shirts and home decor to news, TV shows, friends, family, music and even the books we read - alcohol shows up in our lives ALL of the time.

Now becoming aware that we might have an issue with the way alcohol is impacting our lives, that hits a little differently. And becoming conscious of it? Well that's a few more steps up the ladder.

There is a marked difference between awareness and consciousness. Awareness is when you may feel or sense something without exactly knowing what it is. Consciousness is where you shift from that feeling or sense having to complete understanding over the source of the issue.

Consciousness is where you go from trying to figure out what is off in your life to embracing what needs to change ... your relationship with alcohol.

Don't get me wrong, it all has to start somewhere. And Alcohol Awareness Month is the perfect place to start. We can't fix a problem we aren't aware of, and we have to raise awareness before we can bring consciousness to it.

If you're reading this - you're already aware and that means you're on your way to conscious - even if you haven't made it there yet! And as so many of us can tell you - becoming conscious can be painful but staying conscious is empowering and freeing!
