This year's SAAM campaign celebrates the history and growth of the anti-sexual violence movement. Looking back, we remember the survivors and advocates who laid the foundation for change. Moving forward, we renew our focus on prevention, healing, and action.

In honor of this, we’re taking a look at some history of the anti-sexual violence movement here in New Jersey. Swipe through this post for some highlights.

Today is International Transgender Day of Visibility. We want to take this day to recognize the lives and accomplishments of the many transgender people in our communities, while also acknowledging that there is still a lot of work to be done to achieve justice for trans communities. The world is a better place with trans people in it!

It is also important to note that transgender people are more likely to experience domestic and sexual violence than their cis-gender counterparts. If you or someone you know has been impacted by violence, we are always here. Our helpline can be reached at 866-685-1122.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Be sure to follow along with us for SAAM content all month long.

Did you know that this year marks 25 years of SAAM?

We'll be participating in the NSVRC's national SAAM campaign, “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward.” This Campaign honors the history and growth of the movement while reaffirming our commitment to a safer future for all. Looking back, we remember the survivors and advocates who laid the foundation for change. Moving forward, we renew our focus on prevention, healing, and action. Together, we will learn how to take meaningful steps toward prevention, support those around you, and create spaces where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

Stay tuned!

Your sensitivity isn’t weakness. It’s strength you haven’t fully learned how to use yet.

Some people will laugh at it or dismiss it. Remember that usually says more about what they avoid than who you are. That’s not yours to carry.

You know what you’ve been through. You know how much it took to get here.

Being sensitive means you feel things deeply. You notice. You care. That’s not something to shut down. It’s something to learn how to hold without letting it take control.

Don’t let other people’s opinions harden you.
Let your sensitivity shape your empathy, your passion, your perspective.

You don’t need to be less. You just need to be more grounded in it.

Stay soft. Stay strong.

Myriam is the perfect example of a strong woman leader. We are so grateful for her thoughtful leadership on the Safe+Sound staff. Read her reflection and click the donate link here: https://bit.ly/3XXwZJy to keep empowering future women leaders.

“I’ve grown in my leadership role through various experiences, life lessons, and proactive approaches. I focus on empathy to create a more relatable approach with survivors we serve.

My identity, values, motivations, cultural backgrounds, and years of professional experiences influences me to understand various dimensions. My identity also impacts my ability to inspire trust and make sound decisions when faced with challenging situations.

Surround yourself with women who inspire and support you in your leadership journey. Do not be afraid to take on new challenges and seek growth opportunities. Be a leader who leads by example.”

Lucy Stone was a leader in woman’s rights and was an inspiration to many who came after her, such as Susan B. Anthony. She was born in Massachusetts and became the first woman to get a college degree. Later, she married her husband, but kept her maiden name, which was seen as extremely controversial at the time. She and her husband later moved to New Jersey and purchased a home. When the first tax bill arrived, she staged a protest and refused to pay her taxes because she did not have representation because women were denied the right to vote at the time. When her items were auctioned off by the town, her friends and neighbors joined in the resistance by purchasing the items and returning them to her. Stone was also a prominent public speaker at a time where it was frowned upon for a woman to give public speaches.

The recent situation surrounding The Bachelorette illustrates that domestic violence can and does happen to anyone and should always be taken seriously.

Seeing videos online of domestic violence situations can be triggering. Know that support is available, and you don’t have to deal with that alone. If you or someone you know needs support, Safe+Sound Somerset's 24/7 Call and Text Helpline is here at 866-685-1122. Go to safe-sound.org for more information.

Survivors should never be expected to protect movements, systems, or other people at the expense of their own truth. We believe survivors and honor the ways they reclaim power on their own terms, as Dolores Huerta did today. May her courageous post bring hope to others who feel like they can't speak up.

If reading Dolores Huerta's words bring something up for you, support is available. Our 24/7 Call and Text Helpline is 866-685-1122. Visit our website at safe-sound.org for more information.
