- Medications that affect hydration or sweating
- Cognitive impairments (e.g., dementia) that reduce awareness of overheating

Heat waves can be especially dangerous for older adults, so having a solid plan in place is essential. Here’s a practical, senior-friendly guide to help keep them safe and cool:

- Use air conditioning whenever possible. If unavailable, visit cooling centers like libraries or senior centers
- Close blinds or curtains during peak sun hours to block heat
- Avoid using ovens or stoves -- opt for cold meals like salads or fruit plates
- Take cool showers or sponge baths to lower body temperature
- Drink water regularly. Avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Eat light, hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, or yogurt
- Add electrolyte drinks if sweating heavily or on diuretics (check with a doctor first)
- Wear loose, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics
- Use fans to circulate air
- Cool washcloths or ice packs (wrapped in a towel) on the neck, wrists, or ankles can help
