Sharing a podcast I just listened to with an interview with my teacher, Dr. Datis Kharrazian who was interviewed by Dhru Purohit (episode #231). This is a topic which will interest many of you: "Avoiding risk factors for brain inflammation. This underlies all the neurodegenerative conditions that many are worried about including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, etc. as well as common conditions like brain fog, depression, and fatigue. I hope you will take the time to listen. https://shows.acast.com/broken-brain/episodes/231-avoid-these-risk-factors-to-prevent-brain-inflammation-w
Dr. Hyman's Intro:
Dr. Kharrazian is a clinical research scientist, academic professor, and a Functional Medicine health care provider. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School, and a researcher at the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Kharrazian earned a PhD degree in Health Science with concentrations in immunology and toxicology and a Doctor of Health Science degree from Nova Southeastern University. He completed his post-doctoral research training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Kharrazian earned a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Southern California University of Health Sciences, and a Master of Medical Sciences degree in Clinical Investigation from Harvard Medical School.
Dhru and Dr. Kharrazian break down the primary drivers of neuroinflammation throughout this episode. We learn the stages of brain dis-ease, ranging from less endurance while driving to fatigue after eating and depression, and what the brain is trying to tell you with these symptoms.
Insulin is a huge driver of inflammation and can even help form the tangles and plaques associated with Alzheimer’s. Dhru and Dr. Kharrazian talk about eating a low-glycemic diet rich in flavonoids and healthy fats for the brain to reduce insulin resistance and inflammation. So many people think they are eating a very healthy diet, only to find out it’s causing a blood sugar and insulin roller coaster.
We also hear about toxicity, specifically in our air, and tackling autoimmune diseases by removing things like gluten and dairy that cause immune dysregulation. Dr. Kharrazian shares his tips for building immune resilience and why this is so impactful for a healthy brain as we age.
I hope you’ll tune in.
Wishing you health and happiness,
Mark Hyman, MD
