The rooting reflex occurs when you brush against the cheek of a newborn and they turn their head toward your hand.

This reflex can be seen around 20 weeks post conception and seen when stimulation of the side of the cheek results in turning of the head towards the stimulus. Because the rooting reflex aids babies in breastfeeding, it is strongest immediately after birth.
