As temperatures drop and icy conditions set in, the risk of falls increases significantly for our beloved seniors. Here are some essential tips to help prevent falls this winter:

❄️Wear Proper Footwear: Choose shoes with good traction and support to navigate slippery surfaces safely.

❄️Keep Walkways Clear: Ensure that paths are free of snow and ice. Use salt or sand to improve traction.

❄️Stay Active: Engage in regular physical activity to maintain strength and balance. Simple exercises can make a big difference!

❄️Use Assistive Devices: Don’t hesitate to use canes or walkers for extra support when moving around.

❄️Stay Informed: Be aware of weather conditions and plan outings accordingly. If it’s too icy, it’s best to stay indoors.

❄️Home Safety Checks: Ensure that your home is well-lit and free of clutter. Consider installing grab bars in bathrooms and handrails on stairs.

The City of South Bend will host 2 free community meal pick-up events in December to assist and support residents in need of a hot, nutritional meal.

On Wednesday, December 17, approximately 200 turkey-to-go meals will be served on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Center, located at 1522 Linden Avenue, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. while meals are still available. Green beans, mashed potatoes, dessert, and bottled water are also included with the to-go meal.

On Thursday, December 18, approximately 200 turkey to-go-meals will also be served on a first-come, first-serve basis at the Charles Black Community Center, located at 3419 W Washington St. from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. while meals are still available. Mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, dessert, and bottled water are also included with the to-go-meal.
