Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder that affects about 18 million people worldwide. 🌎 The disease develops when a malfunctioning immune system attacks healthy tissues, affecting joint lining and damaging the bone beneath. 🦴

Besides causing joint pain, swelling and inflammation, the condition can damage other parts of the body as well (including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart and blood vessels).

It hasn’t taken long for the two most recent members of our physician team to make an impression on our practice and patients. 🏥

Specializing in sports medicine with an emphasis on arthroscopic, reconstructive and joint replacement surgery, Dr. PJ Warmoth joined us in August 2024. 👏 Working primarily from our Elkhart office, Dr. Warmoth has already earned praise for his attentive care and professionalism. ❤️

Dr. Sam Kimmell, a South Bend native, is an even more recent arrival, having joined in May 2025. 🙌 Specializing in interventional pain medicine as well as physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Kimmell works out of our South Bend, Elkhart, and Mishawaka offices—and is enthusiastic about giving back to the community in which he was born and raised. 🏡

Years ago, joint replacement materials were less durable than they are today. 😢 But now, advances in stronger, more wear-resistant materials—along with improved surgical precision, minimally invasive techniques and specialized post-operative care—have significantly extended implant longevity. 😀

More than 80% of modern knee replacements are expected to last 25 years or longer, reducing the likelihood for repeat surgeries and helping patients maintain active, fulfilling lives. 👏 👏 👏

A South Bend native, Dr. Christopher Balint—a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine—was an athlete at John Adams High School and later at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1990. 🎓 After medical school in Missouri and an orthopedic residency in Michigan, Dr. Balint completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship in Boston before returning home to join our team in 2002. 🙌

Described as “kind, “thoughtful” and “exceptional” by his patients, he has long served as a team physician for Notre Dame Fighting Irish Athletics. ☘️
