It’s spring sports season at the University of Notre Dame, and the athletes are blooming. 🏌️‍♀️🏃‍♂️🚣

Besides providing Notre Dame Athletics with team physicians for more than 75 years, we’re all diehard fans—and this month, we’ll be rooting on the Irish as they take the field (or court, or pool) in baseball, softball, basketball, fencing, tennis, hockey, lacrosse, golf, rowing, soccer, swimming and diving, and track and field. 📣

We are saddened the passing of our dear friend and mentor Coach Lou Holtz. He frequently expressed his appreciation for his team physicians, Dr. David Bankoff, Dr. Willard Yergler and Dr. Fred Ferlic. As life-long friends, Dr. Ferlic and Lou spent precious time together recently.

Dr. Brian Ratigan, a four-year monogram winner and linebacker at Notre Dame for Coach Holtz, remembers when he told the team, “You give me four years, and I’ll give you forty.” He says Holtz lived by that promise. Today, as the head of sports medicine for the Notre Dame football team, Dr. Ratigan lives by the values of love, trust and commitment that Coach Holtz instilled in him.

Dr. Fred Ferlic says Coach Holtz's three rules of life are:
1. Do what is right.
2. Do everything to the best of your ability.
3. Show people you care.

These are the principles that guide South Bend Orthopaedics.
