Pathways Vermont

Pathways Vermont A non-profit organization working to end homelessness and provide innovative mental health alternatives

Pathways Vermont is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports people to live and thrive in the community at times in their lives when they are most distressed: when they are struggling with thoughts of suicide, are experiencing homelessness, incarceration, institutionalization, mental health struggles or substance use challenges. Pathways Vermont is the first and largest Housing First organization in Vermont, providing permanent housing without requirements or barriers. This evidence based model has been proven to be the most successful approach to ending and preventing homelessness. Through our Housing First programs, we serve people struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as veterans, families, and people coming out of correctional facilities and other institutions. We use a peer-supported alternative approach to mental health in which individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges guide and aid those experiencing similar challenges. From our Community Center that provides peer support in a friendly setting, to our Soteria House which supports people experiencing mental health crises for the first time, to our 7 days/week, non-judgemental phone Support Line, our programs have an immeasurable impact on the everyday lives of our neighbors in need. Since our inception in 2010, Pathways Vermont has succeeded in:

Housing more than 500 individuals, including 180 children
Helping 75 people find employment
Completing 28,842 supportive phone conversations
Preventing 1,122 instances of use of emergency services

Sometimes you just need someone to talk to who understands. ☎️

The Pathways Vermont Support Line provides 24/7, confidential, non-judgmental support and connection for all Vermonters over the age of 18 by phone or text. It’s staffed by local peers who’ve been through tough situations themselves. They listen, talk with you, provide insight, and help you face life’s challenges.

Different from a crisis helpline or emergency hotline, the Vermont Support Line is a “warm line” - your go-to support resource that can help prevent a situation from escalating to an emergency.

Meet Chelsea, Director of Program Administration at Pathways Vermont! ✨ Volunteer Annie Harte recently interviewed Chelsea about her role and passion for working at Pathways Vermont.

When did you start at Pathways?

I started at Pathways about 10 years ago, when I was in graduate school at UVM for mental health counseling. I was looking for just a part-time job, and Pathways had posted a position on Craigslist for a part-time receptionist, and it was two days a week. And so I actually started at the reception desk, just doing basic admin calls and answering the front desk. I have moved steadily through the organization, and now I’m the Director of Program Administration. I’ve dabbled in direct service, but my brain has always liked systems and operations and detail. I love making study guides and stuff like that, so I’m really happy to be where I am in the organization. And the people who do direct service at our organization are just magical, magical humans, and I’m so happy to be able to support them.

What does your day-to-day look like as the Director of Program and Administration?

Every day is very different. Sometimes, I feel like the Director of Admin could seem like a very routine or boring title, and sometimes it is. Sometimes it’s just like regularly invoicing for grants and working with our teams to make sure we’re doing what we’ve told our funder we’re doing. But sometimes it’s definitely more dynamic, like putting out fires and writing proposals. It’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work.

What is a particularly meaningful or inspiring story from Pathways?

The most meaningful and inspiring stories I have from Pathways are the stories of my friends and colleagues at work. Pathways is an organization that truly values lived experience and truly allows you to bring your full self to the workplace- it is one of the things I love most about Pathways and something that really impacts my day-to-day work.

Yesterday was a historic day at Pathways Vermont - we officially cut the ribbon on our Permanent Home for Soteria House! The spark for this project started almost four years ago when Hilary Melton, Executive Director, and Jenny Johnson, Director of Property Development, found this property and had a vision. Years of planning, construction, and visioning led us to where we are now: a permanent home for a life-changing program.

A huge thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this home what it is today. We are so proud to offer innovative mental health alternatives that meet people where they are, and provide access to choice, connection, and community. 💙

Mental Health Urgent Care opened last fall in Burlington and has quickly become a safe, welcoming space for people navigating mental health challenges.

MHUC offers a range of services, including peer support, which Pathways Vermont staff offer Monday through Friday, because connecting with someone who truly understands can make all the difference. “I think that’s what’s made our peer support space so successful,” says Rawnie Davis, a peer support specialist. “We spend time with people who check in, keep them company, or just listen. Many people just want a quiet, safe space — without judgment or expectation.”

Pathways Vermont staff are trained in Intentional Peer Support, a practice that emphasizes mutuality, respect, and meeting people where they are.

That’s exactly what Gabby Makatura experienced when she walked through the doors at MHUC. “It’s such a safe place—no one asks why you’re there or questions your agenda,” Makatura says. “There’s nothing like being surrounded by people who have lived through the same experiences.”

MHUC is a partnership between the Howard Center, Pathways Vermont, UVM Health Network, UVMMC, Community Health Centers, and the Vermont Department of Health. You can learn more about this innovative program by following this link: https://howardcenter.org/mhuc/

To everyone in the Pathways Vermont community, thank you.

Because of you, our programs operate, our neighbors are supported, and we are able to reach more Vermonters every day. Across the state, people are finding connection, stability, and care because a community like yours chose to show up.

A gift today to Pathways Vermont helps ensure that people can access peer support, safe housing, and compassionate care, not just during the holidays, but all year long.

If you’re able, please consider making a year-end gift. Every contribution helps sustain this work and the people at the heart of it. We see you, and we are deeply grateful for all you make possible. 💙
