After years of anticipation, the first US approval of a myopia control spectacle lens was announced earlier today.

The Essilor Stellest lens reduced progression of spherical equivalent refraction by 71% and axial elongation by 53% after two years of wear, according to the FDA.

It's approved for use in children six to 12 years old and the lenses should be worn at least 12 hours per day, every day.

Did you know that 80% of learning is visual? Vision screenings are useful, but they do not detect all ocular and visual disorders.

Routine eye exams are so important, especially in children, whose vision may still be developing. Just because a child doesn’t appear to be struggling visually doesn’t mean there can’t be a problem that needs treated.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends the first comprehensive eye examination between 6-12 months old, again between 3-5 years old, and annually in school-aged children (or more frequently in those with specific eye or vision conditions.)

Don’t forget to schedule those back-to-school comprehensive eye exams! Seeing is learning.

Online eye “exams” may seem convenient, but in-person eye health exams are important to avoid vision (and sometimes even life) threatening problems.

It is also important to adhere to the contact lens brand in which are prescribed to ensure proper fit and breathability, and to disinfect and replace lenses as directed.

The American Optometric Association’s Eye Deserve More campaign shares the story of an ultramarathoner who skipped his annual in-person eye exams and relied ...

A safety reminder for Independence Day: in 2023, U.S. ERs treated 9,700 fireworks injuries. Around 1,800 of the injuries were eye-related. Most occurred at home and often affected bystanders. To lower injury risk:
💥 Keep kids back
💥 Never relight misfires
💥 Soak and discard any duds
💥 Wear eye protection

We did it, West Virginia! SB 565 has officially passed and will go into effect on July 9, marking a huge win for eye care access across the Mountain State!

This is a historic moment for West Virginia optometrists—and more importantly—for the patients we serve. With an expanded scope of practice, optometrists can now provide even more essential care, right in the communities that need it most.

A massive THANK YOU to our incredible members, the dedicated team at WVAOP, the legislators who stood with us and helped share the truth, and Governor Patrick Morrisey for supporting this critical step forward.

This victory belongs to all of you. Together, we’ve advanced the profession—and brought care closer to home for countless West Virginians.
Let’s celebrate this milestone and keep building a healthier, stronger WV!

Governor Patrick Morrisey

West Virginians need your support!

Forcing West Virginians to travel over an hour to see an eye doctor isn’t just inconvenient—it’s a barrier to healthcare.

🔹 Elderly patients struggle with long trips.
🔹Rural families face extra travel costs.
🔹Medicaid & insurance systems bear unnecessary expenses.

Optometrists are highly trained, safe, and ready to fill the care gap. Legislators, we need your support!
