When I was younger and more insecure I'd pretend I knew things I didn't and always worried about being found out.

Now that I'm older and more confident I say 'I don't know' all the time and get explanations in the moment so I never have to worry about pretending to be something I'm not.

We don't forget. Therefore, you have to give yourself permission to be at peace regardless of that other person's words or actions.

You being in pain isn't proving anything. It's just giving that person control over you, and they probably don't even know it.

Take a deep breath.

Decide you don't need to be in pain any longer.

Remind yourself of that every time the anger, hurt, or resentment tries to take you down.

If you wonder why apologizing doesn't change your sense of guilt it's probably because you're experiencing ๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ง๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™™ ๐™œ๐™ช๐™ž๐™ก๐™ฉ.

๐™‚๐™ช๐™ž๐™ก๐™ฉ is when you have actually caused injury to someone.

In that case making amends helps because you've taken responsibility and made attempt to repair the relationship.

๐™๐™ฃ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ง๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™™ ๐™œ๐™ช๐™ž๐™ก๐™ฉ is when you feel guilty even though you haven't actually caused injury.

My favorite example is:

You have friends over for dinner. You make lasagna. The lasagna turns out poorly or gets burned. You feel 'guilty' as if you have caused injury to your guests. But you haven't.

Mistakes get made. No one was hurt. You don't even need to apologize! Pivot. Order pizza, chat and laugh about the lasagna until it arrives.

I once dropped half a container of pepper in the mashed potatoes at Christmas then tried to play them off as totally fine even though they were black. For some reason I thought it would be okay. It wasn't.

I laughed so hard I almost peed myself when my family realized something was terribly wrong. Then I removed the potatoes and moved on (while still giggling.)
