Working to prevent teen substance use
The South Hadley Drug & Alcohol Prevention Coalition is a group of people who live or work in South Hadley and seek to reduce youth substance use in our town. We serve all teens in South Hadley and focus on reduced use of alcohol and ma*****na, all ni****ne products and op**te drugs. We reduced teen use of ci******es from 16% in 2009 to 4.5% in 2015 and the use of alcohol from 76% in 2009 at the 12th grade level to 34.3% in 2017. We have worked with our Board of Health to raise the age of to***co purchase from 18 to 21 in South Hadley and to ban the sale of all flavored to***co products in our town. We established the first permanent secure medication drop-box in the Commonwealth of MA in our police station in 2009 to get unwanted medications out of town residences. We have reduced use of he**in by 12 graders from 8.7% in 2003 to less than 1% in 2015. We implement evidence-based strategies which are matched to our own local conditions. We actively educate our community about the impact of ma*****na on developing teen brains, about the impact of product advertising on teen perceptions, and about the importance of parental involvement by supporting the SAMHSA “Talk, They Hear You” campaign.
