The Gift of Animals
I have the privilege of seeing my team do their magic everyday. Sometimes in unexpected ways. A men's group of 18 came to THE BARN. The men were standing in two lines of nine, six feet apart. I was standing in the middle of the two lines, greeting the group, when Splashy, the mom of the herd, came and stood beside me. When I finished the introduction, Splashy went to one of the men, stood touching him on his chest for a full minute, then walked away.
Later, in another task, the men were all in a circle around Annie. They each took turns walking in, putting a hand on Annie and saying what they valued most in life. When the same man Slashy had touched put his hand on Annie and said his family was most important to him, Annie swished her tail vigorously and shook her head. This didn't happen for any of the others. When the task was over, I pulled him aside and asked if he knew what all this was about. He broke into tears and said he knew exactly. He said when he was serving a mission for his church as a young man, both his parents died. He stayed on his mission, after the funerals. But in doing so, he never grieved. He said Splashy was touching his heart, telling him he was still suffering and he needed to do his grief work. He said Annie was upset when he said his family was most important to him, because while true in feelings, it wasn't true in actions. He said he buried himself in his work to avoid his grief for his parents. He said Annie and Splashy were telling him to get it done so he could open his heart to his family.

It's all about the HORSENALITITY. . .Annie FIRST TIME, less than 30 seconds, never had done it before.
Gullie, after 30 minutes of trying, being rewarded for the slightest try of TOUCHING the barrels. . .

I love this girl.

Anyone who reads this page knows I LOVE horses. I'm committed to never-ending improvement of their lives and my horsemanship/partnership with them. It's been my privilege to be in Pagosa Springs, CO this week studying with Pat Parelli at the Parelli Center.
Yesterday, my gelding Gullie was so emotional after leaving my mare Annie, I had to do an emergency dismount QUICKLY. Today PAT PARELLI spent time with Gullie, then Gullie and me helping me help Gullie through it, using natural horsemanship principles and techniques. What an amazing learning experience and privilege. At the end, I was riding Gullie on a loose rein with him relaxed and his head down. What a privilege to work with such a knowledgeable horseman. Thanks PAT PARELLI.

Donkeys have feelings, Too

Donkey, our mini donkey, does many fascinating things. Like yesterday a therapy, service dog accompanied one of the participants in an equine therapy session. As usual, when a dog attends, Donkey is instantly mesmerized. It's hard for these dogs to understand why Donkey instantly tries to stand face to face, cheek to cheek or side to side. It usually takes him about half an hour to gain their trust, at which point, he literally stands over them, guarding them from any possible danger.

Donkey also greets people by turning and backing up to them, his invitation to scratch his butt, as a form of greeting.

Or, when there is a group session running, if he isn't chosen as one of the equine partners, he picks up a halter and carries it to any person not already working with a horse. Or he wraps himself in a 22 foot rope and follows people as they complete 'tasks'.

One time, Hershel (our other donkey) noticed Donkey was getting all the attention. So Hershal ran to the corner and turned his back to us. One of the other therapists noticed and called Hershel's name. Hershel instantly turned and ran full speed to us.

We love our donkeys. We love how they love us, even more.
