(POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE)

PPH is the leading cause of maternal death in the developing world and in high resource countries, according to the World Health Organization.

PPH FACTS

•"Even with appropriate management, approximately 5% of obstetric patients will experience PPH, and 1% of vaginal deliveries will result in severe PPH." 1
•"More than half of all maternal deaths occur within 24 hours of delivery, most commonly from excessive bleeding. An estimated 140,000 women die of postpartum hemorrhage each year worldwide. That's 1 every 4 minutes." 2
• The US statistics show 6.17 deaths per 1000 in 2014. 3
•"Major obstetric hemorrhage can be managed in a similar fashion to blood loss in trauma."
Maternal Death is considered a Serious Reportable Event (SRE) by the NQF (National Quality Forum)
