When pain medications or steroid injection shots fail to provide much-needed pain relief from chronic back pain, it can be difficult to believe that a safe, non-invasive, pain-free treatment is available to effectively help you treat your back pain.

Spinal decompression therapy has been proven to be safe and effective in providing both immediate and long-term pain relief from back pain and related symptoms.

In this article, we explore some selective independent studies conducted to determine the efficacy of non-surgical spinal decompression therapy in treating a variety of back pain problems.

Suppose you are in a situation debating whether a series of in-office spinal decompression treatments or spinal decompression surgery is the right choice for you. In that case, this article will help give you some key information on both procedures.

We reference spinal decompression in two ways, we refer to it as either non-surgical spinal decompression therapy (this is performed in a physical therapy office) or spinal decompression surgery (this is performed in a hospital with the patient under anesthetic).

Persistent back pain is one of the most common health complaints. Compounded with other related symptoms like neck pain or radiating pain along legs or arms, it can be disruptive to your daily routine. It not only affects your quality of life but can also cause huge financial and mental stress!

Spinal disc degeneration, bulges, and herniations are some of the reasons for neck or lower back pain.

A surgical procedure such as laminectomy and microdiscectomy to decompress the spine is often chosen by those who wish to relieve their back pain and get back to a normal routine. However, spinal surgeries sometimes fail, and the back pain returns either immediately after the surgery or several months down the line.

The overall failure rate of lumbar spine surgery was estimated to be 10%–46%. In an April 2020 study in the Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Research, it was found that there is a substantial risk of ongoing pain following spine surgery with 20% of patients experiencing persistent pain within a couple of years post-surgery.

Why did the back surgery fail?

Seven Herniated Disc At-Home Treatments When You’re In-between Spinal Decompression Therapy Sessions

Your spinal disc consists of a soft inner core and a thick outer layer. It is sandwiched between two spinal vertebrae and joins the two vertebrae while allowing movement of the vertebrae. It also acts as a shock absorber for the spine, absorbing the impact due to various movements like walking, twisting, bending, or lifting.

When a part or all the soft inner core leaks, bulges, or slips out from the thick outer layer, it causes spinal disc herniation, also referred to as slipped disc, bulging disc, or ruptured disc.

A herniated disc is one of the leading causes of low back pain. The symptoms of a herniated disc may also include burning, tingling, numbing or shock-like sensations, and muscle weakness. Depending on the location of the herniated disc, it may cause pain in the neck, shoulders, upper back, pain in the lower back, or radiating pain in the arms and legs.

Here are some things you can do to help relieve pain and heal a herniated disc at home. As always, consult with your medical professional to be sure your at-home self-care is appropriate for your situation.

Millions of seniors face significant risks from falls each year.

This is the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults.

Age-related factors like muscle weakening and balance deterioration make falls a critical concern.

It's vital for seniors and their caregivers to understand these risks and take proactive steps, such as engaging in physical therapy, to enhance strength, balance, and coordination, thereby preventing falls and maintaining independence.

If you're struggling with a herniated, bulging, or slipped disc...
spinal decompression therapy might be worth considering.

However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional first to determine if this treatment is suitable for you.

Note that it's not recommended for everyone, including those who are pregnant, have severe osteoporosis, or have certain types of spinal hardware.

Start with a thorough assessment at your local clinic to see if this therapy could be your path to pain relief and better mobility.
