Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles lasting up to 72 hours after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise.

It is thought to be caused by eccentric (lengthening) loading to the muscle, which causes microtrauma to the muscle fibers.

Athletes and weekend warriors often wonder what to do when they are sore. We have listed 5 things that may help

Prevention/Treatment of DOMS:
1) Slow progression of exercise - Muscles will adapt rapidly to prevent muscle damage, when exercise is repeated.
2) Proper nutrition and hydration will allow the muscle to recover.
3) Stretching the muscles before and after exercise will help to maintain muscle flexibility.
4) Increasing blood flow to the sore muscles, such as heat, use of jacuzzi/sauna and massage may help to reduce the soreness.
5) Non Steroidal Anti- Inflammatory Drugs(NSAIDS), such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen will help to alleviate pain symptoms.
