The world paused to witness a whale give birth and her surrounding postpartum village.

Not because it’s rare.
But because it feels incredibly familiar.

Across mammals, birth often looks the same — movement, pauses, intensity, support, instinct.

We recommend watching animals give birth during pregnancy for a reason.

Not to compare. Not to oversimplify.

But to remind you that your body isn’t confused, your body isn’t failing.
It’s doing something deeply human and deeply primal.

Birth doesn’t always look one way and sometimes it needs support, intervention, or a different path. But even then, your body is not the problem.

If you’re preparing for labor, start here: watch, notice, get curious.

Which one did you connect with the most?

Most people assume a birth center means you’ll have all the support you need.

And you will…but everyone in the room has a different role.

Your midwife is focused on clinical safety.
Your partner is in it with you, emotionally and physically.
A doula is the one who stays by your side the entire time offering hands-on support, helping you cope through intensity, and making sure neither you nor your partner has to figure it out alone.

Especially in unmedicated birth, that continuous support can make a real difference in how it feels.

Not because something is missing.
Because labor asks a lot from everyone in the room.

Thinking about adding a doula to your birth team? Ask us how it can look at Moxie. We love talking it through. 💜

The real work of birth doulas is these quiet moments no one posts about.

It’s reading the room.
Supporting the partner.
Saying the right thing—or nothing—at the exact right time.
Especially in long, unmedicated labors, these small moments add up.

Doula support is invaluable in all birth settings including birth centers. They are worth their weight in gold.

We like to remind you of that every chance we get, especially World Doula Week!

If you’ve had a doula, what’s something they did that stayed with you?

Mia chose to step outside the hospital system to train with us at Moxie for her elective rotation because she wanted to witness physiologic birth and better see collaborative care in action.

That kind of initiative matters. It shapes the kind of provider families actually feel safe with.

We miss having her in the birth center more than we can say but love seeing her carry this work back into the hospital. That’s the point!

The future of care looks like this. 💜

Labor is powerful work.

In the birth room you’ll hear encouragement, reassurance, and reminders to lean into the process.

You don’t have to love. We are happy to validate how hard it can be — because it is hard work.

So yes, our midwives say these things and more. (Our OB does too. 😉)

Support matters in labor. The words around you matter too.

Intrusive thoughts in the postpartum period are common and rarely talked about.

They can feel vivid, scary, or completely out of character. That doesn’t mean you want harm. It doesn’t mean you’re unsafe. And it doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent.

For many families, these thoughts are a sign of a nervous system on high alert, your adjusting to hormone shifts, broken sleep, and the deep instinct to protect.

But if intrusive thoughts feel constant, overwhelming, or are paired with anxiety, panic, or compulsive behaviors, you deserve support. Postpartum anxiety and OCD are real and they are treatable.

At Moxie Birth, postpartum care includes conversations about mental health, not just physical healing. Your mind deserves care too.

If this resonates, save it. And if you’re struggling, please reach out to your provider or a licensed mental health professional.

You do not have to carry it alone.

“It takes a lot to move a person out of your body.” - Jessica Diggs, Licensed Midwife

Sometimes that looks like hours of labor and pushing through exhaustion.
Sometimes it looks like changing plans.
Sometimes it looks like surgery that brings your baby here safely.

Birth doesn’t ask the same thing from every body but every birth asks something.

However your baby arrived, your body did real work. Your experience deserves your respect, support, and time to heal.

Save this for the days you need the reminder: there is no single way to be strong in birth.

Before you arrive in labor, the room is already being prepared for you.

The lights are lowered. The tub is filling. Supplies are set out. The space is quiet and ready. So when you walk through the door, our focus can stay where it belongs: on you, your baby, and your labor.

Birth works best when you feel safe, supported, and unhurried. Preparation is part of that care.

If you’ve been wondering what a birth center feels like, seeing it in person can make all the difference. Tours are always a good place to start.
