Most portable fire extinguishers discharge in only about 8–25 seconds, depending on the type and size. For example, a small 2.5-lb ABC extinguisher may last around 9–10 seconds, while a 10-lb unit can discharge for roughly 20 seconds. That’s not a lot of time when you’re facing a fire. ⏳

According to the National Fire Protection Association, portable extinguishers are designed to fight small, early-stage fires, and quick action is critical. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also emphasizes that employees expected to use extinguishers should receive proper training so they can respond effectively in an emergency.

Did You Know? 🔥💧 Modern Sprinklers Are Heat-Activated, Not Smoke-Activated!

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear? That burnt toast will set off the whole sprinkler system. 🚫🍞 Not true! Modern fire sprinklers are individually activated by high heat, not smoke or steam. Each sprinkler head contains a heat-sensitive element (often a glass bulb filled with liquid) that bursts only when temperatures typically reach 135–165°F. Smoke alone — or a little kitchen mishap — won’t trigger it. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), sprinklers are designed to respond to significant heat at the source of a fire, and usually only the sprinkler closest to the fire activates — not every head in the building.

With all this snow we’ve been dealing with lately ❄️☃️, space heaters become a go-to for extra warmth — but they’re also a leading cause of winter fires! According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, portable space heaters are involved in roughly 1,600–1,700 fires each year, leading to injuries and even deaths if not used safely.

Cold weather increases fire risks as we rely more on supplemental heat. To stay safe:
👉 Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable like curtains, furniture, or bedding.
👉 Never plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip — always use a wall outlet.
👉 Turn heaters off before leaving the room or going to sleep.

His design used a copper container filled with potassium carbonate solution and compressed air to discharge the liquid onto flames — a groundbreaking innovation at the time. 🎖️🧪
